The Basics
Located in St. George, Utah, Desert Haven is a residential treatment facility for women struggling with chemical dependency. Operating under the Southwest Behavioral Health Center network, it provides substance abuse and addiction treatment, mental health services and prevention education.
Accommodations and Food
Desert Haven can accommodate between seven and 10 women and between six and nine children, ages eight and younger. Clients without kids are paired in furnished double-occupancy rooms while those with children are paired with other moms and their little one.
Laundry facilities are availablefrom 7 am to 10 pm, however clients are designated laundry days and times. Cell phones are not allowed. Limited pay phone privileges are provided but clients must purchase their own phone cards.
While there is a TV on-premises, all movies must be approved prior to viewing. Upon admission, staff take all medication and dispenses it designated times. Vitamins are supplied.
All food is provided and residents take turns preparing meals.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admittance, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment with staff members. Social detox is offered at a different Southwest Behavioral Health Center facility. Treatment length is between three and six months.
During the day, Desert Haven clients attend in Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Southwest’s main St. George complex. Daycare is provided. Treatment follows the Matrix Model and includes daily group and individual therapy (scheduled per client’s needs) using evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT. Groups cover trauma, parenting, relapse prevention, coping, anger management, communication skill building, self-esteem, stress reduction techniques, life skills, dual diagnosis and substance abuse education. Desert Haven doesn’t use a 12-step approach to recovery.
Dual diagnosis support is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders. Clients requiring medication are referred to a psychiatrist for an evaluation.
Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted, if deemed necessary. Relapsed clients are immediately discharged from the program.
The Desert Haven team includes residential service staff, CSWs, clinical psychologists and addiction counselors.
Extras
Aftercare includes outpatient treatment, which parallels the IOP but is less time intensive.
Southwest Prevention Services is a division of Southwest Behavioral Health Center and provides education and prevention services to the counties of Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington.
In Summary
Since Southwest Behavioral Health Center’s Desert Haven accepts women on Utah Medicaid, this facility, along with its day care, is a blessing to many financially challenged women in need of addiction treatment. There is a waiting list, and for women seeking a 12-step approach this might not be the right fit, but otherwise it’s a solid option.
Desert Haven does not disclose its address for the safety and privacy of residents.
