Steppingstone, Inc. Fall RiverThe Basics

Steppingstone, Inc. is an addiction and recovery network serving the communities of southeastern Massachusetts. It hosts two of its residential treatment programs in the town of Fall River. These gender-specific programs are based on the 12-step philosophy and include group and individual therapy, psychoeducation, medication management and aftercare planning. They address addiction and co-occurring disorders in a supportive, structured environment.

Accommodations and Food

The facilities for both the men’s and women’s programs in Fall River are large, three-story, homes in residential neighborhoods. The women’s facility has 28 beds while the men’s has 23. Both locations offer shared sleeping quarters that are broken up into units on the top floors, with the bottom floor dedicated to the living room, kitchen and dining rooms. Clients are responsible for maintaining the common areas of the house and switch off chores from a revolving schedule. The residence also houses meeting areas, offices and laundry facilities.

All food is provided by the facility and clients take turns preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner for each other. There are also designated nights for visitation and alumni activities where group meals are made and served at the facility.

Treatment and Staff

The men’s program is between three and six months long while the women’s program can last up to a year.

There are several group sessions held daily along with house meetings and peer counseling. Groups focus on relapse prevention, coping skills, parenting and anger management, as well as HIV education. There are weekly individual sessions that serve as a way to monitor progress and goal setting for the clients. Daily attendance of AA or NA meetings is mandatory and clients have Big Book studies and journaling assignments as well.

The programs aim to restore the client’s confidence and self esteem, so in addition to therapy and 12-step work, it also offers skill building classes, vocational assistance and placement services. As clients progress through the program, many get jobs or enroll in school and are able to have less structured time in the facility.

When needed, medication management is provided as is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with methadone. Case management facilitates medical and dental check ups and treatments, along with specialty services for clients in the women’s program who are pregnant or postpartum.

The staff of the Fall River programs includes LADCs, LCSWs and 24-hour residential staff.

Extras

The clients participate in group activities and regular outings; like movie nights, bowling or trips to a museum.

Family counseling, aftercare planning and assistance with securing housing after treatment are also provided as a part of treatment.

In Summary

Steppingstone, Inc.’s Fall River programs are highly structured inpatient treatment options that give both men and women the chance to begin recovery in a safe, supportive environment. Clients can establish a foundation in the 12 steps while also honing life skills and exploring educational opportunities. Solid resources for dual diagnosis clients and an affordable cost also make this facility a solid choice for those ready to seek help.
