The Basics
Habitude provides men’s-only residential substance abuse treatment in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Since the facility is about 40 minutes south of Toronto and 40 minutes north of Niagara Falls, it caters to both Canadian and American clients. Habitude was founded in 2005 and specializes in a holistic, bio-psycho-social approach to recovery. The programs range from 21 to 90 days and include detox, residential, outpatient and aftercare.
Accommodations and Food
Habitude is located in a comfortable, well-appointed residential home in a quiet upscale neighborhood. The home can host up to nine men at a time, each sharing a double-occupancy room and bathroom with one other client. Furnishings are modern and stylish, with comfortable leather sofas in common areas, a stone fireplace and a fully-equipped kitchen with granite counter-tops and a breakfast bar. The residence has a laundry room, exercise studio and TV area. Residents can also take advantage of nearby trails, mountains and lakes where they can go on daily nature walks.
Habitude employs a chef who works with the staff nutritionist to prepare gourmet meals customized to the tastes and health needs of the men.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Habitude begins with a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment that helps determine treatment needs. If necessary, an on-site detox process includes traditional medical support and orthomolecular medicine; which uses vitamins, minerals, essential oils and sauna therapy. Clients begin a treatment protocol that includes evidence-based therapies, such as CBT, and an introduction to the 12 steps as well as non-traditional and body-oriented therapies like reiki and massage therapy.
Residents attend a schedule of group and individual therapy according to their individualized treatment plan. Sessions focus on building real-life coping skills by changing negative core beliefs, learning stress and anxiety management techniques, setting boundaries, conflict resolution and anger management. Since family relationships are an important part of recovery, there is a strong family component to the programs at Habitude. Customized family support is available for all clients and their loved ones.
The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists, two physicians, two naturopaths and a nutritionist. Clinicians are equipped to treat co-occurring disorders with specialized individual sessions and medication management. Habitude was founded by husband and wife team John Vereecke and Tammy Francouer. Vereecke is a recovering addict and certified counselor and Francouer is an expert on addiction and family issues.
Extras
Family programs at Habitude include an empowerment workshop and a free monthly family group. The workshops are led by Francouer and allow loved ones to talk about the impact of addiction in a structured environment. The focus is on healthy, respectful communication and creating positive boundaries.
Habitude offers a variety of aftercare packages that include outpatient care, family counseling, drug testing kits and vitamin supplements. There is also a free aftercare/family group that meets in Burlington every Monday evening from 7 to 9 pm. Groups feature weekly guest speakers who focus on various recovery topics for approximately 45 minutes. There is an opportunity for the newcomers to ask questions and then the group breaks into two sub-groups—for those on recovery and one for family members—during the last hour.
In Summary
Habitude provides men’s-only residential treatment in a location convenient to the Toronto metro and upstate New York area. Treatment focuses on restoring the body and mind through supervised detox, vitamin supplements, evidence-based therapies and an intro to the 12 steps. This is a great choice for both Canadian and American men seeking high-end amenities, affordable holistic treatment and well-tested therapeutic practices.
