The Basics

Roots Through Recovery is an outpatient treatment center with an optional sober living component, located in uptown Long Beach, California’s Bixby Knolls community. A full continuum of care is offered for those struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Services include outpatient detox or maintenance using Medication- Assisted Treatment (MAT), a Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and basic outpatient care. As mentioned, Roots Through Recovery also offers gender-specific sober living in Long Beach and the surrounding areas.

Accommodations and Food

The three unique, newly updated sober living homes have space for a total of 19 residents. The houses welcome pets and clients who are on MAT. There are two homes for 11 women and one for eight men. All of the residences include full, updated kitchens, washers and dryers and attractive furnishings that are clean and comfortable. One bungalow-style house offers private rooms for three women in Long Beach, just a short distance from the beach. At the other two homes, in Long Beach and nearby Tustin, residents share rooms and bathrooms with at least one other person.

Basic groceries are provided but clients build life skills by preparing their own meals. They are encouraged to take turns cooking and eat together to foster a sense of community. Transportation is provided daily to the main treatment facility.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Roots Through Recovery begins with an initial assessment and evaluation so an individualized treatment plan can be developed. For clients facing opiate withdrawal, MAT is available using Suboxone in conjunction with therapy. The Roots program can provide pregnant women who are addicted to opioids with individualized care, coordinating a MAT protocol and detox that is safe for mother and baby. Although treatment is completely individualized, the program typically runs 90 days.

The Day Treatment/PHP is designed for clients participating in the outpatient detox or coming out of inpatient rehab and are ready to live at home or in sober living but still need structured care. The program runs Mondays through Fridays for six hours a day and includes group and individual therapy. After about two weeks, clients usually step down to the IOP level. This consists of three group sessions a week for three hours each, Monday through Fridays, offered in the days and evenings to accommodate work, school or family commitments. After six weeks of IOP, clients will usually transition to the basic outpatient level of care. This provides a personalized combination of both one-on-one and group therapy for up to three hours a week.

All programs employ a combo of holistic and evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), somatic experiencing, yoga, mindfulness and meditation. There are also specialized sessions geared towards LGBT clients, those with a dual diagnosis and requiring trauma-informed care. Groups never have more than eight clients to create an atmosphere conducive to intimacy and healing.

The clinical staff consists of Master’s-level MFTs and Medical Director Dr. Grace Kwon, an osteopath and psychiatrist. She recently completed her fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Yale University and specializes in MAT. The Board of Directors includes a team recovery advocates passionate about bringing an innovative addiction treatment program to the Long Beach community.

Extras

Roots Through Recovery also offers court-ordered substance abuse treatment and help for those with eating disorders. The organization is in the process of developing an alumni support network from graduates of their programs.
