inexpensive rehabs Guelph OntarioThe Basics

Stonehenge Therapeutic Community in Guelph, Ontario is one of Canada’s longest-running substance abuse treatment programs. It was founded in 1971 as a long-term residential program for men and women. Since then, Stonehenge has expanded to offer programs ranging from inpatient to aftercare with a variety of treatment tracks; including gender-specific care, specialized programs for opioid substitution, pregnant and parenting women and criminal justice clients. There are two gender-specific residential facilities for men called Morrow Hall and Dougan Hall.

Accommodations and Food

The Stonehenge men’s homes have space for up to 40 residents, with 24 in Dougan Hall and 16 in Morrow Hall. The men share double or triple-occupancy bedrooms that are furnished with twin beds and come equipped with personal storage space and shared bathrooms. Common areas include workout equipment and media rooms with cable TV. No cell phones, laptops or mp3 players are allowed on the premises.

All meals are served cafeteria-style with clients assisting in meal preparation. A chef ensures that the food prepared is healthy but with comfort food options. Coffee and tea are served throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

The Stonehenge residential program requires clients to be physically stable and not in need of detox. However, there is an opiate replacement track available for those who wish to participate in ongoing Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with methadone. There is a physician and lab services available on-site. Residents must submit to random drug testing and commit to stay in the program for four to six months.

The treatment process follows a therapeutic community model and clients advance through three phases during their stay. The first phase, known as orientation phase, is the first two weeks of treatment and focuses on getting the client acclimated to the program. During this time, they are paired with a supportive peer and are not allowed any contact with the outside world. Clients participate in multiple group sessions daily, which cover topics like relationships, conflict resolution and spirituality. Additionally, psycho-education classes give clients knowledge about themselves and the disease of addiction. All groups are facilitated by male LADCs that utilize CBT techniques.

The second phase is called active treatment and lasts three to four months. During this phase, individual therapy is introduced as well as special groups for dual diagnosis support. During this phase clients also begin to focus on their general health and wellness by learning about nutrition and exercise, relaxation techniques and risk reduction. Clients may receive medication management and additional assessments by a staff psychiatrist. Medical services are provided as well, including HIV/AIDS treatment and classes on self-care.

The re-entry phase is the third and final phase and focuses on preparing clients for returning back to the community and workforce. Through collaborations with organizations in the community, clients receive vocational education, GED classes, housing referrals and employment opportunities. All therapeutic activities continue but focus shifts to relapse prevention and continuing recovery skills. Residents have the option to attend off-site 12-step meetings or Celebrate Recovery meetings if they want a religious focus.

The Stonehenge organization is headed by Heather Kerr, CSW, who serves as Executive Director. There are also nurses, a psychiatrist, Master’s-level therapists, CADCs and support staff available on-site 24-hours a day.

Extras

Stonehenge Therapeutic Community, in partnership with The Canadian Mental Health Association provides two transitional housing units in the Guelph-Wellington region.

Family members of clients meet once a month for a group that offers addiction education and support. Complimentary aftercare is available for up to two years. This is a weekly group that meets with staff on-site.
