OFFThe Basics

Oklahoma Families First (OFF) has provided behavioral health services to children, adults and the elderly since its inception in the mid-1990s. OFF is currently operating nine locations but outpatient substance abuse recovery services are only offered from the Holdenville and Seminole offices. The OFF website lists the Ada office as a substance abuse treatment provider but those offerings have been discontinued at that facility. The OFF Holdenville and Seminole locations are about twenty miles apart, both southeast of Oklahoma City. Holdenville and Seminole clients experience a similar process, coming in for an initial assessment and receiving a treatment prescription that may include a combination of case management with incorporated individual and group and family therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to beginning treatment, OFF clients come in for a psychosocial assessment that evaluates both their behavioral health and substance use. From there, the staff determines the best course of treatment necessary for each client’s recovery. Some clients may attend outpatient as infrequently as once a month, while others will attend multiple times a week. Many clients make it to OFF via Drug Court or Juvenile Drug Court, therefore outpatient is not elective for some clients but becomes, rather, a preferable alternative to incarceration. OFF does not offer inpatient care or detox, but referrals can be made if needed.

OFF employs evidence based practices in their substance abuse treatment approach. Clients find a balance between one-on-one professional attention and accountability to a peer group. Some groups are more didactic and guided while others are process-based; some groups include a wide variety of addicts while others are tailored to clients’ specific issues. The therapists who facilitate the groups choose to focus on the themes that arise during group rather than a set list of topics. Family therapy is an option for OFF clients and can be arranged with a counselor at the office or at the client’s home.

OFF staff includes LPCs, MFTs, LCSWs, Licensed Behavioral Practitioners (LBP), CADCs and LADCs. The clinical teams are largely LADCs and CADCs and those in training for those licenses. Several are simply Case Managers with a college degree and certification from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Extras

OFF accepts Medicaid and private insurance but for clients without either, payment accommodations will be made on a sliding fee scale.

This organization offers many services apart from strictly substance abuse. The Holdenville and Seminole offices offer parenting classes and a program called SWIFT Adoption which works with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to prepare medical documentation related to adoption.

In Summary

Oklahoma Families First is a large organization that offers affordable substance abuse treatment from highly-credentialed professionals. Limiting substance abuse services to just two offices allows clients to create a sense of community. If Holdenville and Seminole are not convenient for a potential client, the Oklahoma Families First staff will go the extra mile to help the person in need with finding a treatment facility that is more accessible.
