New Start Detox

The Basics

New Start Detox is a CARF-accredited detox and inpatient alcohol and drug treatment program for adults in Orange County, California. It was founded by substance abuse treatment professional Gil Feeling in 2013. The co-ed detox facility is located in Santa Ana while the men’s only short-term residential program is in Tustin.

Accommodations and Food

The detox and residential facilities are in residential homes that can accommodate six adult clients each. Bedrooms are shared by two clients and furnished with Tempurpedic mattresses. All clients share hall bathrooms. Both facilities have two large common rooms with a TV and computer. The residential clients have access to a backyard pool, off-site gym and outside walks.

Cell phones are not allowed for detox clients but there is a facility phone that is permitted during certain hours. Residential clients can earn time to use cell phones and personal electronics during treatment. Visitation isn’t allowed for detox clients but residential clients may receive visitors once a week. Each home has outside patios and yards for residents to enjoy Southern California’s weather.

Each facility has a private chef that plans and prepares meals which are served family-style. Both sugar and coffee are allowed but energy drinks are not.

Treatment and Staff

The seven-day long detox program offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to comfort clients experiencing painful physical withdrawal symptoms. The residential program is 30 days and accommodates only male adult clients. New Start offers evidence-based therapy

In both programs, the day begins at 8 am and is heavily scheduled with individual and group therapy, which uses evidence-based practices, meals and appointments specific to the client’s needs. Lights-out is at 11 pm.

Twelve-step is not included in the programming but New Start does support AA/NA meeting attendance outside of treatment. Dual diagnosis support is not offered so clients struggling with co-occurring disorders are referred to outside facilities.

New Start has 30 staff members that are mixed gender and include a psychologist, CADCs, MFTs, case managers, a chef, housekeepers and support staff. Staff is available 24 hours in both the detox and residential programs.

Extras

For aftercare, New Start Detox refers clients to other outpatient programs. A family program that includes off-site family therapy is available to residential clients. New Start’s chef can accommodate clients’ dietary needs and a housekeeper is available for laundry services.

New Start offers detox and short-term residential treatment that implements evidence-based practices and MAT. Clients can enjoy chef and housekeeping amenities, as well as Southern California surroundings, in a comfortable home while receiving well-balanced treatment for withdrawal and addiction.
