The Basics
Based out of Kaimuki in Honolulu, Hawaii, Salvation Army’s Women’s Way is a residential treatment program for adolescents and adults, as well as their children (up to four years old). The facility is operated by The Salvation Army’s Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division, specifically through its Family Treatment Services program. A less intensive outpatient version of the program is also available.
Accommodations and Food
The Women’s Way facilities can host 20 to 22 clients in small residences resembling cottage homes. During the initial part of their stay, women live in shared rooms and are provided twin beds and cribs, if necessary, as well as dressers and closet space. As they progress through the program, residents may become eligible for private rooms at the staff’s discretion (and if space permits). Each home features shared living areas with TV, on-site laundry and a full kitchen. While the program serves lunch Monday through Thursday, residents are responsible for their other meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, clients undergo an initial intake and assessment to help staff members develop an individualized treatment plan. Programs include individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT. Group topics cover stress management, life skills, assertiveness training, parenting skills, health education and 12-step recovery concepts. Throughout their stay, clients must also attend regular AA/NA meetings. Psychiatric support is available for those with co-occurring disorders as well.
The staff at Women’s Way consists of state-certified addiction counselors, case managers, LCSWs, psychologists and additional Master’s level staff.
Extras
In addition to the above, those in need of a less intensive treatment can just attend the outpatient program. Clients in the residential program can also take advantage of the facility’s childcare services while they attend treatment.
Other programs available through The Salvation Army’s Family Treatment Services in Hawaii include a therapeutic living program for women doing outpatient on the same campus and a two-year sober living track for those who complete primary care.
In Summary
Overall, Salvation Army Women’s Way is a well-rounded program that provides a safe environment for women in recovery. Treatment includes evidence-based care as well as 12-step support, with daycare services included to keep families together during treatment. Salvation Army Women’s Way remains a solid and affordable resource for those who qualify.
