New Dawn Addiction Rehabilitation is a short-term residential treatment program operated by Arnot Health Medical Services at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the rural, upstate New York town of Elmira. It was founded 40 years ago by St. Joseph’s staff.

Accommodations and Food

New Dawn Addiction Rehabilitation is a facility located in a wing of St. Joseph’s Hospital. It can accommodate up to 20 male and female adult clients in double-occupancy, hospital-style rooms with bathrooms.

Personal cell phones and computers are not permitted but clients do have access to the facility phone during certain hours. There is no media room, business center or access to TV during treatment. Visitors are permitted once a week on Sundays. Clients do have access to a washer and dryer and an exercise room with gym equipment. Clients are also allowed to take daily monitored walks outside.

Meals are designed and prepared by the hospital staff and delivered to clients in their rooms. Clients also have access to their own kitchen to prepare snacks in between meals. Sugar is allowed but not caffeine.

Treatment and Staff

Length of treatment is 28 days. Every hour of the client’s day is scheduled and regulated. Wake up time is 6:30 am, after which residents have a full day of chores, meals, individual and group therapy, and other treatment-related activities such as AA and NA meetings. Lights out is at 10:30 pm.

Treatment includes CBT  and the implementation of 12-step recovery. Dual diagnosis support is provided but detox is not. After completing treatment, clients are referred to continuing outpatient care.

Staff includes a medical director, two LDACs, an RN and LPN. The staff is a mix of both men and women and the staff-to-client ratio is one-to-four.

Extras

New Dawn’s family program includes counseling during visitation and three-way calling for family members who would like counseling but are unable to visit.

Aftercare includes a weekly support group that is open to clients 30 days after treatment is complete. Graduates can also attend New Dawn’s AA and NA meetings.

In Summary

In all, New Dawn Addiction Rehabilitation is short-term residential treatment that facilitates a well-rounded combination of evidence-based care, 12-step recovery and support for co-occurring disorders. A small staff-to-client ratio and comfortable surroundings with medical resources readily available make this program a viable option. Those in the area struggling with substance abuse and addiction should consider this facility one worth exploring.
