The Basics

South Dakota Urban Indian Health (SDUIH) is a medical facility that offers outpatient treatment in two locations in Sioux Falls and Pierre, South Dakota. SDUIH is a non-profit organization founded in 1977 as part of Indian Health Service of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Its goal is to provide accessible health care to non-reservation Native Americans but it opens treatment to anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment includes CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse (CBI-SA) and dual diagnosis support via individual and group therapy. It does not offer detox or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). Twelve-step recovery is not a structured part of the program but SDUIH does support clients’ AA/NA attendance outside of treatment.

Length of treatment is based on the needs of client and can range from an eight-week relapse prevention program to up to one year. Generally, clients attend one hour a week of individual therapy and group therapy at their convenience. Most groups are mixed gender but there is one female-only group.

SDUIH can accommodate up to 100 adult clients in each facility. The all-female staff includes a MSW counselor, a CAC, a nurse practitioner, a nurse practitioner with a doctorate (Pierre) and a MD (Sioux Falls). The staff-to-client ratio is one-to-25.

Extras

Clients receiving outpatient treatment also have across the board access to SDUIH’s medical care. They can use the center’s fitness center after passing a physical. SDUIH offers free transportation to and from the facility to all clients.

Yoga and traditional Native American treatments including a sweat lodge and talking circle are also offered. The family program includes counseling scheduled upon the client’s request. When treatment is complete, men and women may continue with group therapy as a form of aftercare.
