Specialized Assistance Services (SAS) is a CARF-accredited, non-profit organization that provides comprehensive treatment to adults struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The residential component of this network facilitates individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, medication management and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) along with case management and aftercare. SAS was established n 1976 and serves the surrounding communities of Chicago, Illinois.

Accommodations and Food

The residence, known as Branden House, is an 80-bed, state-of-the-art facility located in a quiet neighborhood in Manteno, Illinois—40 miles outside of Chicago. Its sprawling campus and home-like accommodations make for a calm setting and clients reside in dorm-style quarters. The campus also has offices, classrooms, medical facilities and a dining hall. Though this is a co-ed program, men and women are typically separated during treatment and live in different parts of the campus. Everything is provided, including food, which is prepared and served on-site.

Treatment and Staff

Inpatient programs are individualized and can include a detox if necessary. The length of stay varies for each person and depends entirely on their needs. Additionally, a methadone maintenance program is available, if necessary, in addition to the regular schedule of group and individual therapy. Treatment is highly structured and offers daily 12-step meetings alongside CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and trauma-informed care.

Group therapy focuses on relapse prevention, HIV education and testing, anger management and coping skills. There are regular goal meetings with clients and their case manager. That time is also utilized to develop an aftercare plan that may include participating in one of SAS’s outpatient programs.

The staff at these facilities includes LCSWs, CADCs and psychiatrists, along with other medical professionals.

Extras

Additional services includes couples and family counseling, skills training, case management services—including medical and dental check ups—and referrals to local AA/NA groups.

In Summary

The residential treatment offered at Specialized Assistance Services aims to provide men and women with not only the tools to remain sober but also the help they need to reestablish the self-esteem and self-worth that might have been lost during their struggle with addiction. With comfortable surroundings, a supportive staff and a combination of both 12-step and evidence-based treatment, this network is definitely one worth exploring.
