Louisville KentuckyThe Basics

The national social services agency Volunteers of America operates Shelby Men’s Recovery Center, a 90-day residential treatment program for men in Louisville, Kentucky. The program focuses on treating clients with co-occurring disorders. It works to enable men to successfully participate in work and school and provides extensive case management services throughout their stay.

Volunteers of America also operate two other substance abuse programs for men in Louisville: Halfway Back—a residential program for men exiting incarceration and Third Step, which supports men as they transition back into the community after treatment. Shelby MRC has been in its current incarnation since 2016, but components of the program have been in operation for the last five years.

Accommodations and Food

Shelby MRC only treats up to 14 men at a time in shared rooms. Bathrooms are also shared. The facility has a kitchen staff who prepares standard American fare. The facility also has a TV room where residents can read and play games during their down time.

Treatment and Staff

Clients in need of detox are referred to one of two facilities close by to complete detox before entering residential treatment. Upon admission, clients receive treatment plans that include psychoeducation classes and group and individual therapy. Since some men are able to attend school and work while in the initial stages of treatment, the frequency of therapy and classes varies from client to client. However, most clients attend at least one treatment group each day and have individual therapy at least once a week.

Therapy uses CBT, among other evidence-based modalities, and the 12-step framework. Groups and classes explore the disease of addiction, anger management and handling triggers. Residents also have art therapy every two weeks. Men are transported to off-site 12-step meetings several times each week.

Case management services are an important part of treatment at Shelby MRC, and men are encouraged to find employment and set educational and training goals. Residents who work often take the second shift to better accommodate their treatment schedule, and the Center has relationships with several employers and vocational training programs in the area.

The treatment team includes MFTs, MSWs and a psychiatrist, all of whom offer comprehensive dual diagnosis support.

Extras

Residents can visit the local YMCA for exercise. Family visitation hours are on Saturdays. Additionally, clients are invited to continue attending treatment groups for aftercare once they’ve left the residence.

In Summary

Volunteers of America’s Shelby Men’s Recovery Center provides residential treatment for men with co-occurring disorders. With only 14 men in residence at any given time, clients receive ample individual attention in treatment groups along with guidance in pursuing education and work goals throughout their three-month stay.
