phoenix-house-mid-atlanticThe Basics

Founded in 1967 in New York City, Phoenix House is one of the country’s largest non-profit substance abuse and addiction treatment agencies, boasting more than 120 programs in 10 states. Phoenix House, which takes its name from the mythological bird of lore, was the brainchild of six newly clean heroin addicts, psychiatrist Dr. Mitchell S. Rosenthal and a group of addiction counselors. Phoenix House employs the Therapeutic Community Model.

Founded in 1962 in Arlington, Virginia as Alcohol Rehabilitation, Inc then Vanguard Services, this facility merged with Phoenix House in 2010 and became Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic. It provides inpatient care for men, ages 18 and older. Its residential treatment program shares a roof with Phoenix House’s Boys Recovery Lodge and Nuevo Dia for Spanish-speaking men. As with all Phoenix Houses, this facility provides additional support for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic can accommodate 68 men who are housed in furnished rooms shared between six and 10 clients. Furnishings include bunk beds with storage units, dressers and lamps.

Residents are served three daily meals inside a dining hall and snacks are also provided. The food is American cuisine, yet Phoenix House tries to accommodate special diets, including heart healthy and vegetarian.

While smoking is discouraged, there are designated outdoor areas.

Treatment and Staff

Though length of treatment is dependent on the client’s individualized plan, the duration is typically 30 days to 12 months. Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic does not provide detox services, however referrals are available if needed. Some residents use Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Suboxone.

During treatment, Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic employs trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices, specifically CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Weekly treatment works within the structure of group and individual therapy, case management and addiction education. Group cover anger management, an introduction to the 12 steps, domestic abuse, relapse prevention, stress management, grief, PTSD, life and coping skills, self-esteem, chronic impulsivity, chronic relapse, co-occurring disorders and peer relationships. Clients are also transported toAA/NA meetings so that they can get a feel for the fellowship and consider it as a part of their aftercare plans.

Clients requiring psychotropic medications are referred to a psychiatrist who, after a consultation and evaluation, can prescribe medications designed to treat depression and anxiety.

Phoenix House uses the Therapeutic Community approach, which stresses reciprocal peer self-help and support. Originally created to treat addicts who were more advanced in the disease, the TC model believes in tough love and utilizes behavior modification; however, its approach has soften over the years and become more inclusive.

The Mid-Atlantic team includes a medical director, psychiatrist, nursing staff, licensed and Master’s-level counselors and trained recovery support staff.

Extras

At this time, residents are being transported to a local gym. However, the facility is in the process of building a gym that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

In Summary

Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic is considered a warrior against the rising opioid epidemic and is also a comprehensive resource for individuals whose primary issue is alcohol abuse. Those looking for an affordable option for addiction and co-occurring disorders in the greater DC area should consider this facility a viable option for treatment.
