The Basics
Swift River is a wilderness treatment center located in Cummington, Massachusetts, an hour west of Amherst. With a strong adventure component, each phase of the program is designed to address different levels of need. The continuum of care includes detox, residential treatment and aftercare for adults dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues.
Accommodations and Food
Swift River is located on a 500-acre retreat in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. The property boasts a lake for fishing and kayaking. The facility is a comfortable atmosphere designed to feel like home for up to 18 residents. Clients live dorm-style and share gender-specific rooms with one other person. Residents have access to a high-quality exercise room, Tai Chi and yoga classes on site.
Nutritious meals are served three times a day and healthy snacks are also available. Each client receives a wellness assessment and based on that, dietary guidelines may be implemented. This may include restrictions on sugar and caffeine.
Treatment and Staff
Swift River residents typically stay a minimum of 30 days but it varies depending on the individual. For clients facing withdrawal symptoms, treatment begins with a physician-supervised detox program designed to smooth out this phase. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using low-dose Suboxone, Naltrexone or Topiramate is available for those struggling to abstain from opiates or alcohol. Clients must attend at least one individual session a week. Group therapy takes place daily and utilizes CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Attending on-site AA/NA meetings is also required as a part of treatment.
Swift River recognizes the importance of dual diagnosis support for conditions like depression, anxiety and trauma as well as serious medical issues such as liver disease and HIV. All clients meet with physicians and a psychiatrist on a regular basis to discuss psychiatric conditions, medications and any other medical issues.
The Swift River staff includes Master’s and PhD-level therapists, who specialize in addictive disorders, CADCs, case managers and LCSWs.
Extras
Along with counseling and clinical care, Swift River offers a broad array of outdoor adventures. Wilderness components of the program include year-round outdoor activities like swimming camping, zip-lining, fishing, hiking and mountain climbing. Clients are encouraged to learn survival skills in the wild; like making a fire from scratch, cooking over a fire and constructing shelters. This is not a boot camp and clients are not required to participate if they aren’t comfortable.
The free, yearlong aftercare program includes weekly calls with a counselor and/or participation in alumni groups once a month. Graduates are also provided with referrals for outpatient programs and assisted in finding temporary housing.
In Summary
Swift River is a great resource for those who need help with substance abuse and behavioral health issues. It boasts an impressive list of adventure therapy options and encourages peer support. The aftercare component is also a great way to take advantage of ongoing accountability necessary for clients to move forward and make positive life choices.
