The Basics
Located in Citra, Florida, a small city south of Gainesville, Phoenix House at Citra Center provides gender-specific residential treatment for men and women with chemical dependency. As part of the Phoenix House network, this program offers treatment at little or no cost to those seeking addiction recovery and comprehensive dual diagnosis support.
Dr. Mitchell S. Rosenthal, a Psychiatrist, several licensed addiction professionals and six heroin addicts were the founding members of the original Phoenix House in 1967. The program began in a detox unit in New York City, where a group of newly clean addicts worried about maintaining their sobriety once released. With the help of Dr. Rosenthal, they moved into a brownstone and Phoenix House was born.
Accommodations and Food
Located in rural Marion County and surrounded by lush greenery, Phoenix House’s Citra Center has a 123-bed capacity. Residents are accommodated in gender-specific rooms, each accommodating between six and 10 clients. Furnishings include bunk and twin beds, dressers and lamps. The facility features a large swimming pool, patio and wrap around gate.
Residents are served three daily meals inside a dining hall. Healthy snacks are also provided but vending machines on-property provide sodas and other treats.
While smoking is discouraged, there are designated areas outside.
Treatment and Staff
Citra Center provides detox, which includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate withdrawal via Suboxone. Once completed, most clients continue on to inpatient or outpatient care, the latter of which is located in Tampa and Brandon.
The Citra Center’s program varies in length, depending on the client’s individualized treatment plan. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy that uses evidence-based practices, specifically CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Case management and substance addiction education are also incorporated into the program. Additionally, clients are transported to AA/NA meetings so that they can get a feel for the 12-step community.
Gender-responsive groups focus on topics like anger management, relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps, grief support, PTSD, coping skills, self-esteem, chronic impulsivity, relapse triggers, co-occurring disorders and relationship issues. Female clients participate in Seeking Safety, a trauma-informed, evidence-based modality. Life skills classes are also provided. Topics include parenting, vocational readiness, health and literacy improvement.
Clients with a dual diagnosis are referred to a psychiatrist. After a consultation and evaluation, prescriptions for medications designed to combat symptoms of depression and anxiety, which often surface in early recovery, can be provided.
Additionally, Phoenix House uses the Therapeutic Community (TC) model, which emphasizes peer support and behavior modification. Though the approach has softened a bit over the years, the TC Model believes in tough love. It put a focuses on helping clients “grow up,” maintaining the belief that while drinking and using addicts suffer arrested emotional development.
Staff includes psychiatrists, LCSWs, LMHCs, registered nurses and certified addiction professionals.
Extras
After inpatient care, residents can step down to outpatient care, which is offered in the Tampa and Brandon locations. Transitional living options are also explored.
In Summary
Overall, Phoenix House at Citra Center is a comprehensive treatment program for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Through individualized and evidenced-based care, clients are given tools necessary to build a strong foundation in early recovery. With decades of service and countless saved lives to the Phoenix House name, those seeking solid yet affordable treatment in north Florida will be well-served at Phoenix House at Citra Center.
