sober living lexington kentuckyThe Basics

Based out of Lexington, Kentucky, Shepherd’s House is a transitional living program akin to sober living, with supplemental therapy for men 18 years and older. The facility requires a year-long minimum commitment but clients can stay for up to 18 months. Throughout their stay, residents work through a three-phase program designed to help reintegrate them into society.

Accommodations and Amenities

The facility itself consists of several small facilities. One building accommodates up to 12 residents in phases I and II; clients share rooms equipped with twin beds, dressers and closet space. The homes also feature common areas with couches and TV, a dining room and full kitchens.

For Phase III, up to eight clients reside in a separate building with privates apartments, featuring with basic furnishings and a kitchenette. All clients are responsible for their own breakfast and lunch but for clients in Phase I and II, dinner is provided. This meal is generally prepared on a rotating basis by a select group of residents and staff and enjoyed communally. Clients in phase III are expected to prepare all their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

As mentioned, the Shepherd’s House program moves clients through three phases but all residents remain in the orientation stage before obtaining a full-time job, paying the initial deposit and getting a sponsor. In general, these phases all include the same requirements of attending 12-step meetings, individual and group therapy and working. Clients earn more freedom as they progress.

During phase I, clients may leave the residence on their own with curfews at 10pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 11pm on Friday and Saturday. Clients are eligible to advance to phase II after the 30 days only at the counselors’ discretion. Phase II offers more freedoms in exchange for more responsibilities and involvement in running the house.

In phase III, residents transition into apartments and pay their own rent, with less rules and more independence. Clients in the this phase are expected to work, stay sober and remain in good standing with the staff and other residents. All clients are expected to attend 90 AA/NA meetings within their first 90 days.

The staff at Shepherd’s House consists of LCSWs, CADCs, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Additional services include aftercare and housing in the program’s unofficial phase IV. In this stage, clients are eligible to rent furnished one-bedroom apartments for a discounted rate to remain in a safe and sober-supportive environment for an extended period of time.

In Summary

Overall, Shepherd’s House provides a comprehensive transitional living environment for men looking to reintegrate into society. The three-stage program allows residents to attend therapy and 12-step meetings while gradually taking on responsibilities, securing employment and building independence. For men seeking an affordable, long-term option in the area, Shepherd’s House is worth considering.
