The Basics
People Helping People in Need (PHPIN) offers outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) substance abuse treatment services for men and women in Irvington, New Jersey. It was founded by Abu-Bakr Sakhu and his wife Qadriyyah Sakhu in 1999 and assists clients from a wide variety of circumstances. Recognizing the differences in treating men and women, the treatment programs are gender-specific.
Treatment and Staff
PHPIN provides a comprehensive approach to treatment that includes addiction education, relapse prevention, CBT and vocational training, as well as services such as job-seeking, housing, medication management and nutrition information and alternative therapies such as yoga, massage and art therapy. IOP services are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, while outpatient and aftercare are available Monday and Wednesday during the same times. PHPIN does not incorporate the 12 steps into its program, though attendance at AA meetings is encouraged.
Intake is done in person or over the phone and covers substance abuse, treatment history and the physical, emotional and mental state of each client. PHPIN can also help potential clients apply for Medicaid.
Outpatient scheduling is flexible to accommodate each client’s daily routines. Generally, the IOP is three days a week for five hours a day, consisting of several group sessions and one individual therapy during which the client reviews with their case manager what they have learned and sets new goals. Group sessions are segregated by gender, with the exception of one coed meeting at the end of the week. Individual therapy lasts between 30 minutes and an hour and additional sessions are available if desired. Random drug screenings may be performed when necessary, generally upon request of an outside agency.
PHPIN staff consists of CADCs, case managers, social workers and a psychologist. The program can serve 60 people at a time with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-eight.
Extras
PHPIN also offers a supported employment program, which connects businesses seeking qualified help with those in recovery seeking meaningful employment. Spanish-language services and family counseling are available and the program also accepts those seeking treatment through the criminal justice system.
In Summary
People Helping People in Need offers a basic outpatient and IOP treatment to clients in New Jersey. Aside from their flexible scheduling, PHPIN provides gender-sensitive treatment at an affordable price. Those in need of outpatient care with a balance of group and individual attention would do well to consider PHPIN.
