The Basics
Founded in 1975, Siena/Francis House started out as a non-profit homeless shelter providing emergency housing for women in Omaha, Nebraska. Since then, it has expanded to include a number of social services for men, women, children, veterans and victims of domestic abuse. Its long-term residential treatment division, Miracles Treatment Program (MTP), is for adults over the age of 19 who suffer from substance abuse, gambling addiction, eating disorders, co-dependency and co-occurring disorders. In order to be admitted, clients must be willing to commit to at least 120 days of treatment, put in 40 hours a week of service to the shelter and enroll in its job training program.
Accommodations and Food
Since MTP is a non-profit, no one is turned away due to financial limitations and there are a total of 398 clients in the Siena/Francis network. The program provides food, clothing and medical services. While entirely free of charge, MTP tries to cultivate the accountability and responsibility within its clients, therefore requiring them to work 40 hours a week at the shelter. Clients not only help run the facility, they also enter Siena/Francis’ employment program and even receive a stipend. Unlike residents of the shelter, those enrolled in MTP do not have to give up their beds every day or leave for during daytime hours.
In addition to the 120 days of free housing, MTP allows residents to stay another 30 days in order to save money for housing post-treatment
Treatment and Staff
Based on the traditional 12-step recovery model, MTP treats any male or female adult who has a sincere desire to change his or her life by abstaining from addictive behaviors. If an individual comes to Siena/Francis House’s homeless shelter and spends his or her first 30 days sober, helping out and attending treatment meetings, they are encouraged to start inpatient treatment.
In addition to 12-step, treatment employs trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices, such as DBT, EMDR, and Seeking Safety, as well as grief recovery, Batterer’s Intervention and Cognitive Change. Clients work their way through three distinct phases of treatment. Lasting a minimum of 90 days, phase one requires them to attend group and individual therapy, participate in the job training program, attend at least five 12-step meetings a week and find a sponsor. Phase two, which has no rigid timeline, is when clients can enroll in school or get jobs while fulfilling their treatment obligations. Phase three requires clients to be employed while they continue treatment and secure a future sober living situation.
Siena/Francis House has partnered up with other non-profit organizations to house a facility on site that provides medical and mental health care to residents. While a client’s initial 30 days of sobriety at the shelter is considered detox, clients in need of formal medical detox can be referred to an outside agency.
In addition to volunteers, an administrative team, directors, program coordinators and interns, there are also five case managers, two shelter nurses and seven licensed counselors on staff.
Extras
MTP also offers transportation services, identification card procurement, employment and educational assistance, family therapy and gardening. Some clients are even able to obtain a donation car.
MTP also provides a number of services specifically for veterans and sets aside 16 beds in its program for this purpose.
In Summary
Siena/Francis House’s Miracles Treatment Program is one of a kind in that it offers free, high-quality substance abuse treatment an underserved population. Its goal is to help down-trodden folks become successful in their recovery from addiction, overcome obstacles in all other areas of their life and secure stable housing, health and employment.
