CottagesThe Basics

Founded in 2008, by a recovering alcoholic with decades of sobriety, The Cottages is a quaint male-only sober living community set about two hours east of Los Angeles in beautiful Big Bear Lake, California. Recently, The Cottages expanded to include Temple House also in Big Bear Lake, a sober living home for women.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Cottages are four little bungalows that have a storybook appeal. Each bungalow accommodates four me, with a total capacity of 16. Furnishings are simple yet rustic. Each cottage includes a kitchen, bath, dining nook and a bedroom with two bunk beds and four dressers.

The Temple House is a two-bedroom cabin-style house that includes a kitchen, living room, kitchen and a dining nook. The house accommodates seven women. Four women share a large bedroom that includes two bunk beds and four dressers, while two clients are paired in a bedroom that has one bunk bed and a dresser. Amenities for both facilities include towels and bedding. Each facility provides the clients with washers and dryers.

Residents are responsible for purchasing their own groceries and preparing their meals. The community of Big Bear Lake is home to 53 weekly 12-step meetings. Clients are offered transportation to meetings each night.

Rules and Regulations

Prospective clients at The Cabins and Temple House must have undergone detox. Urine screening and breathalyzer tests are conducted to make sure clients are clean and sober. Prior attendance at a drug rehab is suggested, but not mandated. A minimum time commitment of 60 days is recommended an there is no limit on how long a resident can stay.

Since both houses follow the 12-step protocol, weekly requirements include attending a minimum of three AA/NA meetings, getting a sponsor and working the steps. They are also expected to work or be actively seeking employment. Self-supporting clients who already have jobs are also accepted. Residents must adhere to an 11 pm curfew, perform household chores and maintain cleanliness in the living rooms.

Extras

Big Bear Lake is famous for outdoor activities including skiing, fishing, mountain biking and snowboarding. Residents are encouraged to make the most of the lovely surroundings and engage in activities together that build a sense of community.

In Summary

Chances are, some people might find the lakeside environment a bit too rural, and those who are opposed to the 12 step approach will want to find another sober living option. However, others might find that this affordable little hideaway sober living community to be the perfect haven away from the city to do some serious step work.
