The Basics
Since the 1970s, the Dakotah Pride Center has been providing culturally-sensitive residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment for the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of The Lake Traverse Reservation.
The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate have approximately 13,000 members throughout the US and overseas. The tribal headquarters, where its treatment centers are located, is in Agency Village, South Dakota. The reservation spans counties in Southeastern North Dakota and Northeastern South Dakota. Unlike many tribal treatment centers, non-tribe members are invited to access services at Dakotah Pride for a fee.
Accommodations and Food
Clients reside in a treatment facility which accommodates up 12 at a time, with eight beds for men and four for women. Men and women reside on opposite sides of the treatment center in gender-specific wings. Clients can visit the reservation fitness room Mondays through Saturdays and relax in the facility’s TV lounge on weekends during down time. A kitchen staff prepares lunches and dinners Monday through Friday, but clients are responsible for preparing their own breakfasts and cook communally on weekends. All residents cycle through a chore rotation throughout their stay.
Treatment and Staff
Clients in need of detox are transported to a nearby facility in Watertown, South Dakota for this service. Once they’ve been clean for 72 hours they can be admitted to Dakotah Pride.
Each client is given an individualized treatment plan that includes daily group therapy and individual therapy as-needed. Treatment incorporates culturally-sensitive teachings of the tribe’s values and customs along with the 12-step framework and evidence-based therapy.
The treatment team at Dakotah Pride is made up primarily of Licensed Addiction Counselors (LACs) who use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Matrix Model to help clients learn coping skills and handle triggers. Clients in need of medical care or dual diagnosis support are transported to nearby Indian Health Services facilities for appointments with physicians and psychiatrists. Twelve-step meetings are an integral part of treatment at Dakotah Pride and clients are required to attend several meetings each week, for which transportation is provided.
Extras
For aftercare, clients can attend a weekly relapse prevention group. Dakotah Pride encourages families to take an active part in treatment, and it hosts a family weekend of workshops and processing groups at least once during every client’s stay. The reservation also hosts a New Year’s Eve Sober Pow-Wow for the community.
In Summary
For over 40 years, Dakotah Pride Center has been helping tribe members of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate heal from substance abuse through its residential and outpatient treatment programs. Its residential program uses a variety of therapy modalities and peer support meetings to help clients better understand their addiction in the context of their family system, heritage and culture.
