The Basics
Located in Providence, Rhode Island, James Ottmar Residential Center for Women (commonly referred to simply as Ottmar Center) offers inpatient care to women suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The facility operates under Phoenix House, a non-profit substance abuse and addiction treatment organization since 1967. While it does not accommodate children, Ottmar Center does provide comprehensive medical and perinatal services in conjunction with a local health provider.
Accommodations and Food
Ottmar Center is a quaint, white-shingled two-story building located in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood. The building accommodates 16 women, who are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds, dressers, lamps and desks.
Residents eat three daily meals, along with snacks, inside a dining hall. There are outside designated areas for smokers, who often sip their coffee while smoking a cigarette.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients receive comprehensive assessments, along with individualized treatment plans. While detox is not offered, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Suboxone is provided to ease withdrawals from opiates.
Length of stay is 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the client. Evidence-based modalities, such as CBT, are used during weekly group, family and individual therapy. Treatment also includes educational classes and attendance at 12-step meetings. Groups cover relapse prevention, trauma, self-esteem, domestic violence and parenting. Classes teach basic life skills and 12-step principles.
Clients with co-occurring disorders receive psychiatric evaluations and medication management. Residents undergo regular drug and alcohol testing to ensure the safety of the entire facility.
The staff includes psychiatrists, CADCs, CSWs, case managers and wellness specialists.
Extras
This facility stresses a holistic approach to recovery and residents participate in exercise, guided meditation and expressive art groups.
In Summary
Phoenix Houses’s James Ottmar Residential Center for Women provides a well-rounded addiction treatment program. Unlike other Phoenix House programs, it fully implements a 12-step approach. This is a wonderful option for financially challenged women struggling with chemical dependency, depression and other co-occurring disorders.
