The Basics
St. Martin’s Hospitality Center has been assisting the homeless population of Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1985. Acting as a nonprofit, SMHC provides families and individuals with a range of services that include mental health and substance abuse care. Clients can enroll in both outpatient and residential programs, including the Casa de Phoenix program which provides chemical dependency treatment and housing aimed to help clients transition into their own independent living situations, helping them to build life skills while developing their recovery.
Accommodations and Food
Up to 20 residents live in a two-story apartment complex with a total of 10 double-occupancy units. Each two-bedroom apartment is shared by two residents of the same gender.
Clients attend treatment at the main SMHC facility located nearby. Each apartment is outfitted with basic necessities including beds and standard furniture supplied by nonprofit donations. Clients are required to bring their own bedding, towels, toiletries and clothing but in some cases, these items can be acquired through a case manager.
Each apartment is outfitted with a basic kitchen with a stovetop and storage space for food. Clients typically apply for food stamps and go grocery shopping for themselves. These skills help the clients to live independently when they transition out of the program. There is also open space on the grounds for the clients to enjoy during down time, and areas to walk for exercise.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to enrollment, clients are screened through an assessment process which determines the level of care required. If detox or a more intensive treatment track is needed, referrals are given to a trusted facility. Utilizing evidence-based practices, clients receive individualized treatment during their time at CDP. Trauma-informed care helps clients who are struggling with the effects of trauma work towards lasting recovery. In addition to substance abuse issues, treatment staff work to address anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions that may require dual diagnosis support. Clients are transported from Casa de Phoenix to SMHC to attend treatment several times per week.
Clients attend both group and individual therapy and learn relapse prevention techniques as well as general life and social skills. Clients also attend community 12-step meetings to support their recovery.
All therapeutic sessions are conducted by credentialed professionals, including LDACs and LCSWs. In addition, clients work with case managers to begin the process of obtaining employment and beginning to support themselves. Until the client finds a way to pay a subsidized part of rent, the services are free.
Extras
Clients can participate in a range of other services offered by SMHC, including medical treatment and access to community resources with the help of case managers. The facility also has a coffee shop that only employs homeless clients so they learn essential job skills.
In Summary
St. Martin’s Hospitality Center has been helping the homeless and under-served populations in Albuquerque, New Mexico for over 25 years. The Casa de Phoenix program enables individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues to begin the process of living independently while establishing sobriety. Clients live in double-occupancy apartment units, allowing them to develop life and inter-personal skills while starting the early phase of the recovery process.
