Oxford House LoessThe Basics

Oxford House Loess Hills in Council Bluffs, Iowa and provides housing for women and their children. It is part of the international network of Oxford House Inc., a non-profit organization that provides sober living for men and women in gender-specific homes. All Oxford Houses are democratically run homes that provide a safe and sober environment for those in early recovery transitioning into regular life. With a focus on independent living and personal responsibility, the thousands of Oxford Houses worldwide offer a second chance to men, women, and their families.

Accommodations and Amenities

Situated on a small lot in a residential neighborhood with stately craftsman and pre-war homes. The Loess Hills house is a modest three-story home with a small porch and spacious large front lawn. Loess Hills can accommodate ten women and their children in two double occupancy rooms and two triples—with the triple occupancy rooms intended for families. Each client sleeps in a single bed, with a cabinet and bedside table. There are three shared bathrooms, a living room with a cable TV, a recreation room with a computer and Wi-Fi, a dining room, on-site laundry facilities and a fully equipped kitchen.

Rules and Regulations

Loess House has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol on the premises, residents must pay their rent on time and must behave in a respectful way towards their housemates. In the spirit of developing autonomy, there is no enforced curfew. Residents of Loess Hills are required to attend a weekly house meeting and a minimum of one self-help meeting or church service a week. Participation in a 12-step program is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged.

All Oxford Houses are a part of a local chapter which includes every other Oxford House within a 100-mile radius. A democratically elected representative from each house meets with the other representatives from the chapter every month to exchange information and to discuss resolutions for problems that arise in the homes.

Extras

Residents of Loess Hills participate in monthly social gatherings with neighboring Oxford Houses to benefit from fellowship and to establish a sober network as support for when they are ready to graduate from sober living.

The Oxford Houses also have a World Convention where elected representatives and clients meet to discuss the functionality of the Oxford Houses and new techniques and treatments for addiction treatment.

Loess Hills focuses less on a strict structure and more on a healing and nurturing environment for women and mothers who need to get back on their feet. The home is accommodating for children, and is ideal for women looking to establish autonomy and a sober community in which to raise their families.
