The Basics
About an hour north of Fargo, North Dakota, the Northwest Change Program in Crookston, Minnesota is one of many services available through the Tri-County Community Corrections organization. Its juvenile residential program is offered to court-ordered boys and girls ages 10 through 18.
Accommodations and Food
Residents stay in an eight-bed residential home kept separate by gender. Clients stay in shared bedrooms with twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. As the facility is outfitted like any normal home, the house also features a dining room, on-site laundry, shared living areas with cable TV and a full kitchen. The staff helps prepare meals, though all residents are expected to learn basic cooking skills and participate in the process as well.
Treatment and Staff
Though all treatment plans are individualized, each includes both group and individual therapy, on-site educational sessions and evidence-based care including CBT and psychoeducation. There is no set length of treatment and, depending on the stipulations of each client’s plan, 12-step attendance may also be required. Groups cover rotating topics which include anger management, sexual education and physical health. This facility does not offer treatment for clients with a dual diagnosis.
The staff consists of Master’s-level counselors and psychologists.
Extras
In addition to the above, the organization also provides a transition program for those leaving the program as a form of aftercare. These services includes education help and employment help.
In Summary
Overall, Northwest Change Program is a comprehensive, flexible residential option for adolescent boys and girls coming out of or trying to avoid jail time. Treatment includes both 12-step support and evidence-based care in a safe and stable environment. While a relatively niche option, Northwest Change remains a helpful resource for those in the area.
