The Basics

St. Christopher’s Inn: Day Rehabilitation Program (DRP) is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that treats men who suffer from substance abuse and chemical dependency. Located an hour north of New York City, in the quiet town of Garrison, St. Christopher’s Inn has been serving residents of Putnam County since 1899. In addition to outpatient treatment and supportive social services, DRP provides free food and shelter to clients at no cost to them.

Accommodations and Food

The majority of St. Christopher’s 183 clients live in its shelter, which gives clients of this unique IOP an experience similar to a residential treatment facility, minus the private rooms and higher costs. Since DRP’s housing and meals are free and the services are in high demand, men are housed in dorm rooms—each with 15 to 20 beds and private lockers. No cell phones or personal electronics are allowed, but landline telephones and computers are available for clients to use.

During free time, clients can use the rec room—which has couches, table tennis, board games and art supplies. For those wanting exercise, there’s a weight room with stationary bikes and nature walks just outside. Located right next to Harriman State Park and the Appalachian Trail, St. Christopher’s Inn is surrounded by pristine, wooded areas that clients can enjoy. Equine therapy is offered to veterans.

DRP’s dining room serves three meals and two snacks a day, all of which are free. The quality of food is above average and is enjoyed by clients and staff alike.

Treatment and Staff

While most clients are referred from other treatment programs or crisis centers, several come straight from St. Christopher’s ambulatory detoxification program.  Although the program lengths vary and each are individualized, treatment at St. Christopher’s DRP usually lasts around 90 days. In addition to daily 12-step meetings, meditations and community meetings, DRP offers individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices and relapse prevention techniques. Typically, the first half of the day focuses on treatment while the second half is dedicated to job assignments around campus. Dual diagnosis support is also available to those in need.

The staff consists of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, RNs, MDs, case managers and pastors.

Extras

After a month of treatment, DRP offers clients’ family members their own family program, which helps loved ones learn about the disease of addiction and to understand the concepts of co-dependency. After intense Sunday sessions, clients and families are permitted a one-hour visit.

Clients have a wide range of services available to them, including programs like smoking cessation, computer training, yoga classes, vocational and educational services—including GED prep. Case workers make sure each client has a place to go at the end of treatment, referring many of them to halfway houses or sober living facilities. If further treatment is needed, case workers can also refer clients to outside agencies and social services in their communities.
