Sober Living johannesburg south africaThe Basics

The YouTurn Halfway House is a brand new luxury sober living home in the suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa. It offers a safe and clean environment for men transitioning out of an inpatient treatment facility or participating in an outpatient program. Utilizing a strategy based on 12-step principles, You Turn’s goal is to create a strong sense of community and fellowship. The home was founded by two friends, Brett and Pierre, who want to share the hope they have found in recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

The large ranch-style residence can accommodate up to 10 men and is situated behind a secured gate in a quiet residential neighborhood. Men are housed in four double or triple-occupancy bedrooms, each with twin beds and contemporary furnishings. Two bathrooms are shared among residents, each with a full shower and dual sinks. Clients have their own storage areas for toiletries and belongings and are asked to keep common areas of the house organized. All bedding and towels are provided.

The common areas are beautifully furnished with comfortable sofas, a large flat-screen TV and cable for use during downtime. The home also has a computer, printer and Internet to be used for job searching and staying connected with friends and family. A landline telephone is also available. The backyard has a patio with a pool and a ping-pong table. Two large seating areas are arranged and create a hub for socializing and group dinners.

The kitchen has storage for individual supplies and is fully equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, oven and stove—all available for clients to use. The facility provides paper products and coffee but residents are expected to shop for their own groceries and prepare their own meals. All meals are served family-style, Sunday through Thursday at 6:30 pm, and residents are required to be present.

Rules and Regulations

The sober living home offers structure for residents and a program dedicated to supporting long-term recovery. All potential clients are required to have attended primary treatment or a detox prior to enrollment and commit to a minimum of 90 days at You Turn.

The house maintains a rigorous schedule of activities; including a mandatory minimum of five AA/NA/CA meetings a week, finding a sponsor and working the steps. Every Sunday and Tuesday clients attend required house meetings and residents are held accountable for cleaning and maintaining a tidy living space. The curfew Sunday through Thursday is 10:30 pm and 12:30 am on the weekends. During the weekdays, residents must be out of the house between 9 am and 2 pm—either working, looking for a job, doing volunteer work or attending treatment.

The house enforces a zero-tolerance policy for using alcohol or drugs. All residents are frequently administered urinalysis tests at random times and if a client is found to have relapsed, they are immediately evicted.

Extras

Residents regularly take trips to attend movies, go on shopping trips and socialize on weekends. The men are encouraged to fully engage themselves in the surrounding recovery community activities by attending sober events.

In Summary

For men in Johannesburg seeking a structured sober living environment, the YouTurn Halfway House is a great choice. By living the 12-step principles and incorporating plenty of structure, clients remain engaged in recovery-focused activities and become a part of a strong sober community. Their stay at YouTurn Halfway House leaves them equipped with a support group and prepared to live independently.
