Washington DCThe Basics

For over 30 years, Samaritan Inns has been a cornerstone of the Washington, DC recovery community. It operates a number of transitional care facilities and a residential treatment program for adults. Many of its clients are economically at-risk, and its deep roots in the community enable it to connect clients with the services and supportive programs to aid them in building sober, independent lives.

Accommodations and Food

Once admitted to the residential program, clients usually stay in treatment for four to six weeks. They are accommodated in a home situated in an area between Howard University and the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Residents share rooms and the facility has a common area with a TV where residents can also socialize, play games and read.

Samaritan Inns employs a kitchen staff to prepare standard American-fare meals and snacks. For exercise, clients can go for supervised walks in the neighborhood and use the facility yard to work out. Personal phones and computers are not permitted—however, if clients need phones for work or family emergencies, staff members can hold onto their phones and notify them of in-coming calls.

Treatment and Staff

Residential treatment at Samaritan Inns is highly structured. Days are spent in group and individual therapy, including processing groups on both Saturdays and Sundays. Groups are led by LPCs and Certified Addictions Counselors (CACs) who use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients develop coping skills. The clinical team also conducts classes in life skills and the disease of addiction and uses movies and other media to educate and inspire clients.

Samaritan Inns endorses the 12-step framework and requires clients to attend at least three AA/NA meetings each week, which are available nearby. While co-occurring disorders are addressed in therapy, clients in need of on-going dual diagnosis support are transported to nearby mental health clinics for therapy and medication management.

Extras

In an effort to help clients focus on themselves and their recovery, outside visitors are not permitted except on an emergency, case-by-case basis. Samaritan Inns’ deep roots in the Washington DC community enable it to help clients create effective aftercare plans, which may include finding sober living homes, outpatient programs and employment and medical services.

In Summary

For over 30 years, Samaritan Inns has been helping at-risk men and women address their addiction in a safe, structured residential program that relies on cognitive therapy and the 12-step framework to help clients create a foundation for recovery. Its network of transitional care facilities and affiliated sober living and outpatient programs ensure that clients can take a next step in recovery after completing the residential program.
