The Basics
Opened in 1972, the Phoenix House Men’s Residential Hauppauge Center of New York offers residential substance abuse treatment for men using evidence-based therapy. The Hauppauge Center takes a holistic approach to treatment, and staff guide clients through the emotional, mental and physical aspects of recovery. The 12 steps are not used in treatment; instead therapeutic services incorporate CBT methodology.
Accommodations and Food
The Hauppauge Center accommodates clients in a home-like setting. Residents share bunk beds in rooms that sleep up to four men. There are also a few double-occupancy rooms which are assigned to clients who are further along in their treatment. All meals are included in the cost of stay but clients are responsible for cooking all meals on a rotating schedule, which are served family-style.
Treatment and Staff
Upon admittance, clients may enroll in either a short-term or long-term residential treatment program. Length of stay may vary from 30 days to over a year as needed. A clinician’s assessment determines an individualized schedule for each client based on their acuity and recovery needs. Treatment includes group and individual therapy sessions, dual diagnosis support for those clients with co-occurring disorders and one-on-one case management as well as discharge planning.
On average there are five group sessions scheduled each day and residents are expected to attend a minimum of one individual session per week. The Hauppauge Center is not a lock-down facility; clients are free to leave at any point if they so wish. Staff promote personal responsibility and accountability among clients who also participate in health-conscious recreational activities.
Hauppauge Center staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, CSWs, a family therapist, clinical case managers and Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs) as well as wellness, vocational and educational specialists.
Extras
Family counseling sessions are also available, and visitation and communication with family is highly encouraged so clients establish a solid support network to sustain lasting recovery upon release.
