The Basics
Odyssey House is a non-profit founded in 1967 by psychiatrist Dr. Judianne Densen Gerber as a drug-free alternative to opiate addiction. Based in New York City, Odyssey House has evolved into a social service agency offering various substance abuse resources, including residential and outpatient treatment and sober living. Odyssey House’s adolescent outpatient program serves adolescent boys and girls, ages 12 to 17, at its facility in the Bronx and at clients’ homes.
Treatment and Staff
Odyssey House New York Adolescent Outpatient program is known as New York Serving Adolescents In Need Of Treatment (NY-SAINT). It implements evidence-based treatments, including the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA), Functional Family Therapy (FFT), Assertive Continuing Care Protocol (ACC) and the Seven Challenges Program.
A-CRA is a behavioral treatment method that reinforces positive motivation and drug/alcohol refusal skills. FFT is a family program that addresses drug abuse and behavioral issues within the family unit. ACC Protocol is Odyssey House’s case management program, which connects clients with outside services and resources and offers relapse support through home visits. Through the Seven Challenges Program, clients work with counselors to develop good decision-making skills.
Clients are first assessed by a counselor, after which, a program is crafted to meet their needs. Clients with a dual diagnosis receive additional support through individual therapy with a psychiatrist and medication management. Although the 12-step principles are not implemented into treatment, clients are welcome to attend AA/NA meetings to supplement their recovery.
On-site and at-home sessions are generally one-hour long and frequency is based on the needs of the client. The overall general length of the outpatient program ranges from three to 12 months.
Odyssey House’s staff includes full and part-time medical, clinical, recovery and administrative support, including CADCs, LADCs, CSACs and LCSWs.
Extras
