The Basics
With offices located in both Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah, Project Reality is a not-for-profit facility originally established in 1970. It offers outpatient treatment for adult men and women that includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Suboxone or methadone. Additionally, it facilitates outreach prevention programs for adolescents.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment process begins with a voluntary confidential assessment. From there, an individualized program is created that consists of individual and group therapy, psychoeducation classes and a medication schedule. A complete commitment to treatment is required; which includes attending therapy and taking any prescribed medication regularly. Project Reality’s goal is to help clients get clean and sober while also reducing their risk of illegal activity, improving physical and mental health, increasing communication skills with family members and guiding them towards independence.
Medication is issued seven days a week in the early morning hours. Initially, doses are higher and as clients stabilize and continue to show clean drug screens. The dosage then drops to a maintenance level. In addition to screening for opiates, the facility is able to detect alcohol and other of drugs. If a client tests positive for anything not prescribed, progression within the program is delayed.
Group therapy commences once a week, while individual sessions can range from weekly to monthly, depending on the specific needs of the client. Therapeutic methods are evidence-based and include harm reduction materials. Though treatment does not incorporate the 12 steps, clients are can get information about local AA and NA meetings upon request. Although Project Reality primarily treats those with substance use disorder, consultations, referrals and medication management are available for those with co-occurring disorders.
Staff consists of LPCs, LCSWs, MFTs, LSACs, LPNs, psychologists, RNs and physicians.
Extras
The outreach programs offered to adolescents include HIV education, case management and parenting classes. Couples and family counseling is also available.
In Summary
Project Reality provides a comprehensive treatment plan that combines both therapy and MAT, with the intention of stabilizing and treat the whole-person, not just their addiction. For those in the Greater Salt Lake area, Project Reality is a valuable resource worth consideration.
