The Basics
Seneca Nation Health System offers comprehensive primary care and behavioral health services to tribe members in New York’s Allegany and Cattaraugus territories. SNHS has been in operation since 1976 and provides outpatient substance abuse treatment in Salamanca, a small city inside the Allegany Indian Reservation, near the border of Pennsylvania.
SNHS seeks to create a productive life for the Seventh Generation of Native Americans and their treatment program is a multi-phase plan that combines treatment methods which aim to help clients recover physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed—usually once a week. Clients initially commit to a 12-week phase of treatment. After the initial phase, many clients choose to continue with a second phase of treatment, also 12 weeks.
Therapy uses CBT and the treatment team includes CASACs and MFTs. Treatment in Phase One focuses on addiction education using the disease model of addiction. Staff help clients identify triggers and learn about mental health and wellness. In Phase Two, clients make a deeper exploration of relapse prevention, learning coping skills, anger management and how to create a healthy support system.
SNHS also employs a psychiatric nurse practitioner to administer medication for mental health health diagnoses, and clients have access to SNHS’s behavioral health team of psychiatrists and therapists for dual diagnosis support.
Clients struggling with opioid addiction can receive Suboxone from a local physician and attend a weekly Suboxone therapy group at SNHS. SNHS also encourages clients to seek out peer support meetings such as AA/NA and hosts an AA meeting on-site on Tuesdays.
Extras
For aftercare, SNHS has an “open-door” policy, and clients can attend groups periodically and check in with their primary counselor. Clients can also bring family members to individual therapy sessions for family counseling.
