The Basics
For over 10 years, Roanoke Comprehensive Treatment Center has offered outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in Southwest Virginia. Located in Roanoke, a large cultural and business hub, it offers treatment using methadone and Subutex. There is also a Suboxone program, but this option currently has a waiting list. Roanoke CTC also requires clients to attend group and individual therapy for their first two years of treatment.
The clinic is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are assessed, they and the treatment team decide which course of MAT they’re best-suited for: methadone or Subutex.
Clients must participate in group and/or individual therapy at least twice a month for their first year of treatment and at least once a month during their second year of treatment. Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and groups are led by counselors with Master’s-level credentials in counseling or psychology. The treatment team also includes physicians and nurses.
Roanoke CTC has over 100 therapy groups each month. Groups include early recovery, grief, co-dependency, coping with anxiety and parenting skills. There are also experiential therapy groups such as writing therapy and an on-site 12-step meeting each Saturday. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group sessions but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics.
Clients can apply for take-home doses after 90 days of successful treatment. Roanoke CTC hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
Extras
Roanoke CTC trains long-term clients how to lead peer support groups. The clinic is also in the process of creating a family support and education group.
In Summary
In addition to methadone and Subutex MAT, Roanoke Comprehensive Treatment Center provides recovering opioid addicts with over 100 support groups each month. Groups focus on diverse topics for clients at every stage of recovery. and the clinic is currently developing a plan to provide support and education for family members as well. Clients have the opportunity to not only receive the medical support they need, but to also enjoy a vibrant and support recovery community.
