pickaway-area-recovery-servicesThe Basics

Pickaway Area Recovery Services (more commonly referred to as PARS) offers gender-specific residential treatment in Ohio’s rural Pickaway and Fayette Counties. Pickaway Women’s Residential Facility and Pickaway Men’s Residential Facility are in Circleville, Fayette Women’s Residential Facility is in Washington Court House and Muskingum Women’s Residential Facility is in Zanesville.

The Pickaway Community Action Organization founded PARS in 1978, and its mission is to better understand chemical dependency through scientific research, evidence-based treatments and prevention strategies. PARS also offers evidence-based prevention programming, youth education, a driver intervention program, a weekly family support meeting and two outpatient facilities in Circleville and Washington Court House.

Accommodations and Food

Each facility accommodates 12 to 15 clients, with both treatment and residences in a non-medical setting. All facilities have shared rooms and communal bathrooms except for the Fayette Women’s Residential Facility that has private rooms and bathrooms. Bedrooms do not have a TV but each residence is equipped with a communal room that has one TV, which may be used during specific times.

Three meals a day are provided and menu items are designed by a dietician. Food are prepared by the clients and served family-style with allowances for limited sugar and caffeine.

Cell phones and personal computers are not allowed on premises. Clients can earn privileges to use the facility phone to contact family members and sponsors at certain times. Supervised visitations are allowed after a period of time for a couple of hours once a week. Clients can also earn furlough time to leave the premises.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment is phase-based and length varies depending on the client’s needs. Treatment includes daily individual and group therapy based on the Matrix Model, blending evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT, with 12-step recovery principles. Transportation is provided to off-site AA/NA meetings.

A typical day begins at 6:30 am and includes morning and afternoon group and individual therapy,  with breaks for meals as well as recreational and personal time. The day ends with a group and an optional AA meeting and lights are out by 10:30 pm.

PARS doesn’t offer detox or dual diagnosis support on site but does work with outside agencies and mental health providers. While there is no physician on staff, transportation is provided for medical care.

There are nine full-time staff members who are certified and licensed to meet Ohio state laws. Supervisors, including the residential director, are all LCDCs and both LCDC counselors and CDCA case managers work with clients during treatment and aftercare. The staff-to-client ratio is three-to-12 and all staff members work with their gender-specific groups.

Extras

Recreational activities include nighttime walks, bowling and church events. Clients may also attend off-site weekend religious services. Graduates of the residential programs who live locally are connected to Pickaway’s two outpatient facilities for aftercare or they can be referred to an outpatient program that is convenient for them. The residential director connects graduates to alumni for continued support.

In Summary

Pickaway Area Recovery Services offers gender-specific, phase-based residential treatment in four locations in Pickaway and Fayette Counties. A combination of 12-step and evidence-based treatment, a well-rounded staff and low resident numbers make PARS a good option for setting the foundation of long-term sobriety.

Pickaway Area Recovery Services does not release the addresses of its residential facilities.
