The Basics
Red River Hospital is located in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the Northcentral region of the state. Red River is an acute care psychiatric hospital that provides both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment. It also has a detox unit, where the average stay is five to seven days.
Red River recently joined the Acadia provider network, an international mental and behavioral health group which operates a number of outpatient and residential treatment facilities throughout the United State and United Kingdom. However, the facility has been in operation and serving the residents of Texas and Oklahoma for over 40 years.
Accommodations and Food
The adult inpatient unit has 22 beds and treats both substance abuse and psychiatric residents. Clients have roommates in the modern treatment facility, and the unit has a common area where residents can watch TV, read and play games during down time. Clients take their meals in the facility cafeteria, which serves modern American fare and can accommodate allergies and preferences.
Red River is a locked facility, and so clients cannot come and go at-will, but they do have some supervised outdoor time.
Treatment and Staff
After detox, clients usually remain in inpatient treatment for two to four weeks. Therapy at Red River uses CBT, DBT, family systems and the 12-step framework. Residents attend group therapy several times each day and have individual therapy as needed. Clients receive comprehensive dual diagnosis support and those in need meet with a psychiatrist and/or psychiatric nurse practitioner for medication management.
The treatment team also includes Master’s-level therapists, such as LPCs and LSCWs, and case managers. The treatment team encourages participation in 12-step meetings and brings facilitated meetings to the unit several times each week.
Red River also has a dedicated unit for active-duty military personnel, the Military Heroes Unit. The MHU treats mental health and substance abuse and employs therapies to combat PTSD such as Cognitive Processing Treatment (CPT), rigorous exercise and equine therapy.
Extras
For aftercare, the treatment team helps residents develop a plan that may include ongoing individual therapy, sober support meetings and/or Red River’s outpatient program—which offers both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Its case managers make sure that clients in need of additional services can connect with the appropriate agencies. Red River is in the process of building an Alumni Program to create more ongoing support for its clients.
Red River also provides free inpatient treatment for indigent members of the Northcentral Texas healthcare district.
In Summary
Red River Hospital has been treating mental health and substance abuse since 1973. Its inpatient unit provides structured, medically-supervised treatment with extensive dual-diagnosis support, making it a strong option for those struggling with psychiatric conditions alongside their substance abuse.
