The Basics
Since 2009, Pottstown Comprehensive Treatment Center has offered outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts using methadone. This treatment program also requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses, ensuring that clients recovery physically, emotionally and mentally.
Pottstown CTC is located in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, a small city on the Schuylkill River, 40 miles southwest of Philadelphia. The clinic is a member of the Acadia treatment network, a mental and behavioral health group which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are assessed, they must attend seven group orientation sessions, ideally within their first month of treatment. These group sessions address HIV prevention, the clinic’s policies and procedures and addiction and medical issues.
Following the initial orientation sessions, clients are required to attend eight hours of therapy each month, which is usually divided between four sessions each of individual and group therapy. The groups explore topics such as women’s issues, parenting skills and healing from trauma.
After 90 days of successful treatment—including clean drug screens—clients can begin applying for take-home doses of their medication. As they continue to qualify for more take-homes, they can reduce the number of hours they attend therapy each month. Therapy uses CBT among other evidence-based modalities, and groups are led by CADCs.
The treatment team also includes physicians and nurse practitioners. Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to nearby mental health clinics for dual diagnosis support. Clients are also encouraged to seek out peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous or NA, if they think it would be beneficial.
Pottstown CTC hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set timeline.
Extras
At present, clients must be residents of Berks or Montgomery County, and county subsidies are available to help pay for treatment.
