Acadia: Discovery House Treatment Centers of Mechanicsburg and New Castle

The Basics

The Discovery House Treatment Center is a network of substance abuse treatment facilities with branches throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The Mechanicsburg and New Castle locations both offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) on an outpatient basis. Treatment is limited to opiate addiction, and combines MAT with therapeutic services. These facilities do not follow the 12-step approach.

As members of the Acadia Healthcare network, the Discovery House Comprehensive Treatment Centers are among many behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with residential, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at both facilities is offered exclusively to clients who are over 18 years of age. Clients are prescribed methadone, Subutex or Suboxone which are administered in conjunction with weekly sessions of group and individual therapy. Clients also participate in classes that discuss recovery skills and healthy coping skills, set personal goals and have access to aftercare planning. Frequency of sessions is determined by each client’s need and schedules are individualized.

Office hours are the same for both Mechanicsburg and New Castle—Monday to Friday from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm. Medication is administered Monday through Friday between 5:00 am and 12:00 pm, and on weekends from 6:30 to 9:30 am. A required minimum of two-and-a-half hours of counseling per month (one individual as well as one group session) are compulsory aspects of the treatment program. Clients are also expected to medicate seven days per week for a minimum of 90 days.

DHCT staff consists of Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs) and an on-site medical doctor.

Extras

Both the Mechanicsburg and New Castle facilities provide HIV and family counseling, medical examinations, clinical assessments, job training, placement and educational assistance as well as nutritional counseling.

Services provided by The Mechanicsburg and New Castle branches of the Discovery House Treatment Centers are ideal for prospective clients who require a low-intensity outpatient program. While treatment does not incorporate the 12-step framework, clients are required to attend both individual and group therapy in addition to MAT, ensuring that they are addressing the emotional and mental aspects of addiction in addition to the physical.
