PNLHThe Basics

Founded in 1990 in Plymouth, Michigan, Personalized Nursing LIGHT House offers a comprehensive approach to substance abuse recovery. This nonprofit facility provides clinical assessments, short-term residential care, sub-acute detox, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), day treatment, case management and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adults. Clients involved in one of the outpatient programs are also eligible to live in a PNLH apartment complex. This organization provides support not only for co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety, but also for specialized populations such as the homeless and those with HIV/AIDS.

Accommodations and Food

The housing units available to those participating in one of the PNLH outpatient programs are apartment-style accommodations. Each unit can house up to four clients a time, with bedrooms shared between two people. The modest rooms feature twin-sized beds, Ikea dressers, carpeting and natural sunlight. Each space also includes a living room with a TV, a dining room and a kitchen.

The apartments are slightly different from sober living, as the emphasis is more on serving clients in need than providing an environment that caters to the newly sober. Still, all residents are expected to maintain their sobriety while living in the apartments.

The gender-specific residential programs and sub-acute detox are housed in a more traditional treatment facility. Detox rooms  host one client at a time with queen-sized beds. Residential clients are in rooms shared between two at at time, with twin-sized beds and small dressers. The facilities also offer common areas with comfortable couches, therapy rooms, offices and dining rooms. The residential and detox facility has a total of 36 beds.

The short-term residential and detox program provide three meals a day for residents. Special dietary requests can be accommodated. Meals are served buffet-style and feature a variety of options. Those living in the apartment complexes are required to shop and cook for themselves.

Treatment and Staff

PNLH has many different levels of treatment for substance abuse. Clinical assessments are conducted to determine which program would be most appropriate. This screening process usually takes two hours and is conducted by a Master’s-level therapist.

Detox offers a monitored withdrawal process, with medication available when necessary. This process usually takes between three to seven days. The length of treatment depends on the client, with all treatment supervised by a physician.

The residential program offers treatment for 28 days or less. This gender-specific, trauma-focused program immerses clients in a mixture of individual and group therapy as well as 12-step work. Residents participate in groups on a daily basis, covering topics such as relapse prevention, trauma, processing and life skills. Individual therapy occurs on a weekly basis and on-site AA/NA meetings are offered several times a week. Toward the end of treatment, aftercare plans are created.

When it comes to outpatient care, clients have many options to choose from. PHP is held five days a week for six hours at a time; the day treatment program is held five days a week, for four and half hours at a time; and the IOP is held three times a week, for three hours at a time.

All levels of outpatient care include a mixture of group and individual therapy and 12-step work. Topics discussed are similar to those in the residential program. Clients in PHP or the day program may receive more then one individual session per week. Evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT are used in all of these tracks. While clients are not required to attend outside AA/NA meetings, they are highly recommended.

Those who participate in the outpatient programs are eligible to live in PNLH apartment housing. This service allows clients to live a in a safe and sober environment, attending treatment during the day and having the option to do as they please in the evenings.

The staff includes physicians, Master’s-level therapists, social workers and LADCs.

Extras

PNLH also offers case management, driver’s license assessments and renewals, monthly alumni support groups and recovery-oriented seminars.
