The Basics
McCallum Place provides outpatient and residential treatment for eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and compulsive exercising with two locations in Missouri—in St. Louis and Columbia—and one in Overland Park, Kansas (near Kansas City). It aims to “help patients restore energy, exercise balance, flexibility and trust.” Clients are given individualized treatment plans, and staff utilize evidence-based treatment methods to help clients develop life skills in support of lasting wellness.
McCallum Place was founded in 2002 by Dr. Kimberli McCallum, a board-certified psychiatrist and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS). Dr. McCallum is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, received her medical degree from Yale University and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Washington University.
McCallum Place is a member of the Acadia provider network, which operates an international group of treatment facilities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.
Accommodations and Food
McCallum Place has three residences. Its women-only facility is located on an upscale 18-acre campus retreat outside of St. Louis. Its co-ed adult residence is situated in a rustic and quaint home with modern amenities. The co-ed residence is in walking distance to downtown St. Louis and residents can take trips to local shops, movie theaters and the farmers market. Those enrolled in the adolescent program are accommodated in a large traditional home in suburban St. Louis. All clients have private rooms.
Each residence has a kitchen staff to provide nutritious, planned meals and snacks. Clients also attend weekly meetings with a dietitian and participate in meal planning classes.
Treatment and Staff
Clients begin each day with breakfast at 8 am and spend their days participating in group therapy, individual therapy and life skills classes. Adolescents also have tutoring hours each day. Therapy uses DBT, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and CBT. Group topics include overcoming shame, mindfulness, and goals. Clients also have art therapy and authentic movement classes. Clients in all facilities end their days with quiet time from 9:30 to 11:30 pm, when lights go out.
The treatment team at McCallum Place includes physicians, dietitians, nutritionists, yoga therapists, recreational therapists, nurses and LPCs, MFTs and MSWs. Clients also meet with a psychiatrist every week to address co-occurring mental health issues and have a meeting with a registered dietician (RD) each week. Weekly therapy with an MSW or LMFT and a physical exam with an MD is also part of each treatment plan. During the day, the client-to-staff ratio is four-to-one.
Clients are medically monitored 24/7, and the treatment team can arrange hospital care and primary care appointments for clients in need of medical intervention. Tube-feeding is also available.
McCallum Place has a dedicated outpatient and residential treatment track for elite athletes, called The Victory Program. The Victory Program addresses health eating habits for athletes, the emotional pressures of competition and forming a positive relationship with exercise.
Extras
Pet therapy, equine therapy and planned recreational outings to cultural and community events are also arranged for clients enrolled in residential treatment.
McCallum Place endeavors to involve family members at all levels of treatment. It hosts a monthly Family Day for eating disorder education and a weekly family group on Mondays. Visiting hours are scheduled at each residence on Saturdays and Sundays.
This is a facility that invests significant time in aftercare planning for all clients. Most residential clients choose to continue their treatment in McCallum’s outpatient PHP and IOP. For those who do not live locally, McCallum can arrange housing in its transitional apartments in St. Louis.
McCallum Place regularly checks in with alumni to monitor their progress and offer encouragement. It recently started an Eating Disorders group—open to all—on Tuesdays, and an Alumni Group on Thursdays (both in Webster Grove, Missouri). It also offers periodic educational webinars and community events to alumni.
In Summary
McCallum Place is a highly-regarded eating disorders treatment center with three residential treatment homes in and around St. Louis. Its comprehensive and credentialed team supports clients and their families at every stage of their disorder and provide outpatient and long-term aftercare support once they’ve completed their treatment plan.
