The Basics
Place of Hope is located in Columbia, Tennessee, a small suburb of Nashville. This residential treatment facility began over 30 years ago when founder Mike Coupe got together with Dr. John Brown to offer free healthcare, including addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment, to the homeless. Place of Hope offers a faith-based approach to recovery in a supportive environment that’s conducive to healing.
Accommodations and Food
Place of Hope’s residential care is facilitated in a former nursing home. It has 64 beds in bedrooms that are shared and 72 bathrooms throughout the building. This facility is over 6,000 square feet on a six-acre plot of land in a quiet neighborhood. There is a medical clinic on site as well as a large industrial kitchen, dining room and designated areas for meetings and therapy. There is also a place of worship.
The program has several outreach programs that clients participate in, including a weekly trip to Nashville where staff, volunteers and clients offer food, clothing and live music to the homeless community. There are also Sunday events where the facility provides transportation for the homeless to the local church where they can attend services and receive a free meal.
For clients, Place of Hope provides three meals a day, which are served cafeteria-style.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, clients undergo an assessment to identify the roots of their homelessness. They are then placed into a treatment program that offers spiritual teaching, 12-step philosophy and life skills classes. There are group and individual sessions daily and education courses are offered to clients and their families. Groups cover relapse prevention, aftercare planning and benefits of connecting to a peer-support community such as AA or NA. The ultimate goal is for clients to feel strong enough to reintegrate into the community and secure their own housing and employment. Once clients leave the residential phase of the program, Place of Hope is able to offer continued outpatient care.
Treatment is heavily based on the teachings of the Bible and there are devotionals and church services daily. Every Sunday, clients are transported to the Nashville Recovery Church where they participate in prayer and receive additional help for themselves and their families.
All programs are operated in part by the kindness of volunteers in the Columbia community. The counselors are LADCs and ministers.
Extras
Family counseling programs and aftercare options are available—either in group or individual settings. In addition, as previously mentioned, this facility is able to offer transitional housing.
In Summary
It’s rare to find a place like Place of Hope—one that serves out of the kindness of its heart and operates solely on the donations of other like-minded people. Though treatment is based on Christian values, being affiliated with the Christian faith is not required as Place of Hope offers services to anyone who sincerely wants help jump-starting and maintaining their recovery.
