Galax VirginiaThe Basics

Established in 2000, Virginia’s New River Comprehensive Treatment Center has provided outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in Galax, a small town at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwestern Virginia. New River CTC is located off Highway 58, a short distance from the city’s municipal golf course.

New River CTC offers treatment plans using Subutex, Suboxone and methadone, and it requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.  New River CTC is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.

Treatment and Staff

After clients are assessed, they and the treatment team decide which course of MAT they’re best-suited for: methadone, Suboxone or Subutex. Clients then receive a dosing schedule which includes a plan for applying for take-home doses once they’ve successfully participated in several weeks of treatment. Currently, state regulations dictate clients receive eight weeks of methadone treatment and at least six weeks of Suboxone treatment before applying for take-homes.

Clients attend four orientation sessions during their first month of treatment which help to acclimate them to the clinic’s procedures and to educate them on the disease of addiction and HIV prevention. During their first year of treatment, clients must attend group therapy at least twice a month. During their second year of treatment, they must attend group therapy at least once a month. Group therapy is optional during the third year of treatment and beyond. Most clients also have individual therapy at least twice a month.

New River CTC’s treatment team is made up of physicians, nurses and CADCs. Counselors use CBT in group therapy to explore topics including relationship skills, handling triggers, family relationships and addiction. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics. If a client’s counselor feels he or she would benefit from peer support meetings such as NA, referrals are given to local meetings.

New River CTC hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set timeline.

Extras

New River CTC offers a group on money management and encourages clients to bring loved ones to individual therapy for family counseling.
