The Basics
Established in 2008, Peninsula Counseling is an independent recovery facility in Gig Harbor, Washington—a small city on the shore of the Puget Sound. It offers substance abuse counseling on an outpatient basis.
Treatment and Staff
Peninsula Counseling was founded by BB Buskirk, a long-time Gig Harbor resident and former dentist, who went back to school at age 60 to earn a Master’s in addiction counseling and become a Chemical Dependency Counselor. It’s worth noting that Buskirk is also the facility’s only employee.
Peninsula Counseling offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) consisting of group therapy on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in 90-minute sessions at either 9 am or 5 pm. Typically, groups are small and contain clients in different phases of recovery. Clients can also have weekly individual therapy with Buskirk where CBT is used as the main approach. An introduction to the 12 steps is also offered and encouraged; however, this more traditional method of recovery it is not overly-emphasized as Buskirk believes clients’ should determine what works best for them. IOP typically lasts for 12 weeks, at which point clients transition to a standard outpatient track that consists of groups once to twice a week.
Peninsula Counseling also offers one and two-year deferred prosecution DUI programs where clients typically engage in the IOP for three months, then transition to six months of standard outpatient, followed by 15 months of one session a week.
Given the small size of the organization, clients have a large degree of agency in determining the length of their program, with the ability to extend their group and individual sessions indefinitely. Thus, while there is no official aftercare program. Peninsula Counseling focuses on clients whose primary diagnosis is substance use disorder, therefore those with co-occurring disorders might find more appropriate resources at another facility.
Extras
Additional services include marriage and couples counseling, as well as sessions that incorporate family members depending on the individual situation.
In Summary
Peninsula Counseling is a small-scale addiction recovery program led by its founder; However, clients still can expect a comprehensive IOP that uses evidence-based methods and 12-step integration. Furthermore, given the size of the program, clients are afforded a great deal of individual attention and can be sure they are aligning themselves with an organization that is borne out of a sincere desire to help people.
