Pasadena CaliforniaThe Basics

From 2006 to 2013, Elijah’s House of Pasadena, California operated as a sober living facility. For the past three years, treatment has transitioned into a residential substance abuse treatment program with tracks lasting 30 to 90 days. Treatment is separated into three phases: the first 30 days are intensive, the next 30 are the moderate phase and the last 30 days are the transition phase. Elijah’s House also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), basic outpatient treatment, detox and sober living, all following the 12-step framework.

Accommodations and Food

Elijah’s House runs out of a modern two-story home in a residential neighborhood of Pasadena. The house holds 10 beds and clients share their rooms with one roommate. Depending on availability, single rooms may also be available. All treatment takes place in-house.

Clients may not have access to the Internet but may read newspapers and magazines, listen to the radio, have phone calls with loved ones and watch TV at designated times—and always under staff supervision. Elijah’s House provides three meals a day, which are included in the cost of the stay.

Treatment and Staff

The Elijah’s House residential program lasts a minimum of 30 days. The schedule begins with meditation at 9:30 am followed by process group from 10 am to 12 pm. Clients break for lunch at noon, then resume groups from 1 to 5 pm, after which dinner is served. Groups then continue from 6 to 7 pm, possibly including attendance of off-site AA/NA meetings.

Elijah’s House also offers holistic treatment options and dual diagnosis support on top of the individual and group sessions. Treatment plans are individualized for each client, while case managers and therapists are available to residents throughout the day. Friday outings may include going to the movies, bowling or trips to the mall (all outings are decided upon as a group). Clients can also do yoga or go hiking on Thursdays.

Upon completing the first 30 days of residential treatment, clients may step down to the IOP or outpatient track if their progress permits. Elijah’s House also runs a family program, which treats spouses, significant others and clients’ children.

Elijah’s House employs three therapists, two psychologists, a nurse and consulting medical doctors.

Extras

A sober living option is also available but only once clients complete the minimum 30-day stay. The sober living house is around the corner from the residential home and also has 10 beds. Cost for a month’s stay includes two days per week of IOP treatment for six hours but does not include meals or food.

In Summary

Elijah’s House has been part of the substance abuse treatment community for about a decade, operating first as a sober living facility, then expanding services to include residential treatment, IOP and general outpatient services. In addition to evidence-based therapy and the 12-step framework, clients may participate in holistic treatment activities as well as social outings that help cultivate peer relationships and healthy living.
