Founded in 2004 in Waukesha, Wisconsin by executive director John Arenson, Sober Alternative Living Spaces (SALS) Recovery Houses & Coaching provides sober living for men and women in early recovery from chemical dependency. At SALS, clients enjoy a large amount of independence, as there is no curfew. However, the houses expect residents to work on a recovery program and to maintain abstinence from alcohol and/or drugs.

Accommodations and Amenities

SALS operates five old-fashioned houses including a Colonial, a traditional white Victorian and a Cape Cod-style residence. Four of the houses are in Waukesha, and the other is in Milwaukee. Each gender-specific house accommodates between eight and 12 clients.

Clients share double or triple-occupancy furnished bedrooms, which include twin or bunk beds, dressers, nightstands and lamps.

At SALS, residents can pay $600 (30 days) and purchase their own groceries, or they can opt for the Life Skills track at a cost of $900 (30 days), which includes four $50 food cards which are dispersed to them on a weekly basis by staff. Either way, all clients prepare their own meals and are responsible for making sure that the kitchens are kept tidy and clean.

Amenities include wifi, all utilities paid, a landline with free local and long distance calling, off-street or garage parking and laundry rooms. House managers live on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must have undergone detox and passed a drug and alcohol screening. SALS refers to their house rules as “expectations” with the belief that clients are independent adults and should be treated as such. The weekly expectations include attending regular 12-step meetings, working the steps with a sponsor, attending the house meetings and/or enrolling in an outpatient program.

Residents are expected to pitch in, clean up after themselves and lend a helping hand if they see a housemate struggling with a vacuum cleaner or the toilet plunger. Couch potatoes and those unmotivated to live active lives are not welcomed here. During the day, unemployed residents are expected to be out of the house and looking for work. Those with jobs are required to be good employees, and must get to work on time.

Residents have the freedom and autonomy to come and go as they please, but if they are planning to spend the night at their family or friend’s house, they must first gain permission from the house manager, and must return clean and sober.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At SALS Recovery Houses, a zero tolerance policy is enforced regarding relapse; those who are found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs must vacate the premises immediately with their belongings to ensure the safety of the entire house.

Relapsed clients who require immediate medical assistance are referred to a local hospital or detox facility.

Extras

Beyond a safe and sober living environment, SALS provides recovery coaching, interventions for distressed families of alcoholics and/or addicts and sober chaperone services.

Recovery coaching provides clients with hands-on support towards getting their lives back together. This support might include job coaching, school enrollment assistance, transportation, 12-step meeting referrals, goal setting and creating a day-to-day schedule helping clients stay active and focused on building a solid foundation for sober lives. These services are provided at an additional cost, and are also open to the community.

In Summary

SALS Recovery Houses is a supportive and structured environment for men and women who have a little sober time under their belt. The homes are comfortable, quiet and clean and residents are allowed autonomy as long as they remain clean and sober. Clients are given the opportunity to assimilate into the real world with a supportive and sober network while they rebuild sober and independent lives.
