The Basics

Open for a decade, Serenity Malibu is a luxury Southern California substance abuse treatment facility. It offers a highly structured, holistic, non 12-step based approach which includes dual diagnosis support. Serenity’s residential program may last from as little as 15 to as long as 90 days and utilizes evidence-based modalities including the Seasons Systemic Family Treatment Program, a method focuses on treating the whole family and includes loved-ones in therapy sessions.

Accommodations and Food

Serenity clients are housed in a luxurious, 7,500 square foot Spanish-style estate overlooking Malibu beach. The grounds include a pool and spa, spaces for massage therapy and views of the ocean. Clients share a room with one roommate, though private rooms are available at extra cost. Décor is traditional American, and bedrooms are furnished with full or king-sized beds, and some feature balconies with expansive views. Bathrooms are marble-floored with sunken Jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces.

All therapy, meals and activities take place either in the main house or on the Serenity campus. The grounds are landscaped and feature a swimming pool and hot tub with beach-views. All meals are included in the cost of stay and are prepared by Le Cordon Bleu-trained chefs. The warm and homey kitchen is fully equipped with high-end appliances and apart from designated meals, plenty of snacks and drinks are also available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Serenity clients begin with medically-managed detox. Serenity accepts 10 to 12 clients at a time. While clients take part in individual therapy, treatment mostly focuses on relapse prevention education and aftercare planning, as well as a trauma assessment to discern individual roots of addiction. Clients also receive drug and neurobiology education, may take part in SMART recovery sessions and brain spotting. Further therapeutic activities and approaches include yoga, acupuncture, massages therapy, hypnotherapy, surfing, art and cooking therapy. Clients may also receive neurofeedback, craniosacral and dream therapy and typically participate in creative writing, play tennis, undergo shamanic healing and benefit from nutritional coaching.

While in treatment, clients may go on outings for recreational activities which include hiking, nature walks, swimming and kayaking on the beach. Furthermore, Serenity puts together weekly alumni conference calls and quarterly alumni events. Various interning and volunteering opportunities are available at the main Serenity treatment campus or even at the client’s home. For clients who relapse within a year after completing treatment re-admission is free. Serenity upholds a “make-sense” policy for personal electronics use.

Serenity staff includes five psychologists, three medical doctors, two psychiatrists, three counselors, three case managers, sober companions, six site managers, an acupuncturist, a yoga instructor, a massage therapist and three chefs.

For the past ten years, Serenity Malibu has hosted residents in a luxurious residential program in Malibu, California. With access to world-class beaches and high-end accommodations, Serenity helps clients from the first stage of detox through aftercare planning using a holistic approach to treatment. Serenity does accept most PPO insurance plans and also offers some financing options, possibly putting the facility within reach for clients who may find the price-tag out-of-reach.
