The Basics

New Hope Manor was founded in 1970 in Barryville, a town in upstate New York right on the Pennsylvania border. Initially started by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, the OASAS-funded organization provides residential treatment for adult women in both the Barryville and Poughkeepsie.

Accommodations and Food

New Hope Manor operates an intensive residential program as well as what it refers to as a “community residence program.” The intensive program operates out of a large building in Barryville. The residence has a mixture of double and triple rooms with a capacity for 48 women and 12 children. Women with children usually share rooms with other mothers and their kids. The building also has a medication room, classrooms, area for group meetings, counseling suites and a businesses administration area.

There is a full-time chef on staff who prepares three meals daily as well as two snacks throughout the day. Clients occasionally have the opportunity to participate in the preparation of the meals if they wish.

The community residential program is run out of a smaller house in Poughkeepsie. It has a mixture of both single and double rooms with a total of 10 beds. Like the intensive residential house, this facility has an on-staff chef who prepares three meals a day.

Residents also participate in a variety of both indoor and outdoor recreation. The intensive residential house has a volleyball court, a swimming pool and a workout room, with indoor activities including crocheting, knitting, sewing, art and music. The purpose of these activities is to help clients improve their coordination, leadership and teamwork skills, as well as learn sportsmanship.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are assigned a social service representative who helps them fill out applications for public assistance, food stamps and social security. Also, if they have any outstanding legal issues, New Hope Manor assists them in obtaining any legal representation or advice as well as transportation to and from court appearances. All clients are required to have insurance or Medicaid prior to entering treatment. Detox is not available and must be completed at an outside facility if necessary.

Although the exact length and intensity varies, the intensive residential program usually lasts for a year to 15 months while the community residential program is four to six months. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy, with clients attending daily group meetings in both the intensive and community residential programs. Counselors aim to address each client’s needs and use education, sharing, relapse prevention, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Individual counseling is set up on a case-by-case basis.

The community residential program accepts clients who are both stepping down from the intensive residential program as well as those who are entering the program directly. This program operates very similarly to that of a sober living house where clients have a greater degree of freedom, but also have a daily regimen of both group and individual therapy. Clients are encouraged to find jobs while in this program and the group meetings are based around the schedules of the clients.

Counselors also utilize the 12 steps and regularly bring in outside speakers to discuss AA and NA-related topics.

The organization is dual diagnosis and clients with potential co-occurring disorders are referred to the on-staff psychologist and mental health team.

New Hope Manor’s counselors consist of a mixture of CASACs and LCSWs.

Extras

The organization also offers training and courses in career guidance, computer literacy, GED classes, business and more, available through Marist College.

The Mother-Infant Program at the Barryville residence provides pre- and post-natal care as well as pediatric care for newborns. This program also features hands-on education and instruction on infant care from a registered nurse. New Hope Manor also runs regular mothers group through this program that covers both gender-specific and early infant issues.

New Hope also emphasizes the importance of fostering spiritual development and provides transportation to and from local church services on Sundays. There are also occasional groups focused on faith-based issues.

Upon client request, The Community Residential program also offers individual family sessions with the client, counselor and their loved ones.

In Summary

New Hope Manor offers both intensive and individualized residential treatment to adult women. The Mother-Infant Program offers new mothers a safe environment for their children while receiving treatment. The variety of recreational activities keep clients active during the treatment process. New Hope Manor is affordable care that sets a strong foundation for recovery.
