The Basics
Victory Home is a Christian rehab facility that offers adult men residential, faith-based substance abuse treatment. Located in Tallulah Falls, Georgia, Victory Home is located on the border of the Chattahoochee National Forest about 20 miles from the border of North Carolina. The facility was established 1959 by Reverend Bill Cadle and has offered treatment services to over 10,000 men over the last half-century through spiritual teachings, a work-study program and giving the clients an opportunity to remove themselves from the noise of daily life and learn more about themselves.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility is a three-story farmhouse on 38 acres of land near the mountains. The grounds are filled with thick, green shrubbery and tall trees, making the facility a private getaway for effective treatment. There are usually between 30 and 40 clients in the program at once, and they sleep in a dorm-style setting with bedrooms that fit three or more clients in each. The dorm area has a large, shared bathroom with showers that the clients use, and there are also various bathrooms throughout the rest of the facility. There are several classrooms and meeting areas, a back patio area and chapel on site. Clients are permitted to smoke in assigned areas of the facility, and take leisurely nature walks to the pond where the clients occasionally swim or relax on the shore.
All meals are included for the men while they are participating in the treatment program, and the food is prepared by some of the clients who are assigned to the kitchen. There are set menus and healthy choices offered as well, including salads and vegetable options with every meal.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Victory House usually lasts around six months, though there is an opportunity for the 20 or so clients to stay a bit longer. The treatment is exclusively based on Christian values, and the clients participate in a number of Bible study and prayer meetings daily, and work on the campus taking care of the grounds, housekeeping or cooking. Much of the program also requires the clients to hold each other accountable.
For the clients who do stay on past the first six months, referred to as Phase One, they move into a separate dorm on the other side of campus and with the guidance of the staff, start to look into either enrolling in school or securing a job. This is also an ample opportunity for each of the men to be a positive role model for the clients currently in the first phase of the program.
The staff of Victory House has a lot of former clients from program who are now serving as counselors. The facility staff isn’t trained substance abuse counselors, but do offer the benefit of their personal experiences, spiritual guidance and assistance.
Extras
The clients have a rec area which consists of several weights and workout machines, a basketball court, a large kitchen and several work areas, like the wood working shop that is fully equipped with all the proper equipment to make furniture for the residence or the thrift shop where some of the clients work during their time in treatment.
In Summary
This program relies on faith based methods and a peer accountability factor between the men who are participating. For some this way may not seem like a proven modality to help someone get off of drugs or alcohol, but for many of the clients who have gone through the program at Victory House, they are thankful for the help the have received and swear by the results.
