The Basics
Navajo Department of Behavioral Health Services was founded in 1988 in Window Rock, Arizona, a small town just west of the New Mexico border. Operating under the umbrella of Navajo Nation Public Health, Navajo Department of Behavioral Health Services operates 19 locations on the Navajo Nation reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. Navajo provides outpatient substance abuse treatment services to adult men and women of Native American descent.
Treatment and Staff
To qualify for treatment at one of Navajo’s locations, individuals must be of Native American descent and present a certificate of Indian blood. All of Navajo’s services are offered free of charge to those of Native American descent. Once incoming clients have completed some initial paperwork, they meet with a counselor to help chart out a potential treatment plan. Clients who are in need of a more intensive level of care are referred to outside residential or detox programs.
Navajo’s outpatient program consists of a mixture of both group and individual counseling. The exact length and intensity of the treatment is based on the needs of the client. Although the average size of the groups varies, Navajo aims to keep most groups between five and 10 clients. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques in the group meetings including CBT, relapse prevention and some Motivational Interviewing (MI). Navajo also offers a domestic violence group for both married clients and clients living with their families.
Although Navajo is not 12-step based, the organization provides a space for outside AA/NA groups to meet and encourages clients to attend these meetings.
Navajo is dual diagnosis and refers clients with potential co-occurring disorders to the organization’s mental health counselors.
The organization’s counselors are a mixture of LADCs, LSWs, LPCs and LMSWs.
Extras
Although Navajo does not have an official family program, clients can request individual meetings with their counselor and their family members.
In Summary
Navajo Department of Behavioral Health Services offers a free outpatient treatment option for Native Americans living on the Navajo reservation in eastern Arizona/Western New Mexico. The flexible length and on-site AA and NA meetings provide clients with the opportunity to receive as much formalized treatment as needed and connect with peers who are also new to recovery.
