The Basics
Meridian Healthcare was founded in 1972 to aid residents of Northeastern Ohio struggling with addiction. It currently operates several residential and outpatient treatment facilities for men, women, veterans and the homeless. Meridian created the first programs for co-occurring disorders in Ohio, and took over the Donofrio Recovery Centers network in 2007.
Meridian’s South Campus offers a women’s 90-day inpatient program. Its nearby Meridian Women’s Center South provides transitional care for up to two years to women with young children. The South Campus also offers one-on-one counseling for those with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
MSC’s treatment facility houses women up to 90 days. Women are assigned roommates and the facility doesn’t allow women to bring their children, though children and other family members are invited to visit. A kitchen staff prepares standard American fare for all residents three times a day. For recreation, women can work out in the facility’s exercise room. Limited TV is also permitted in the facility’s common area.
The South Campus features individual furnished apartments for women and their children and residents can decorate to suit their personal style and comfort. The apartment complex features an exercise room for adults and there’s a nearby playground for children.
Treatment and Staff
MSC clients have a daily curriculum of group and individual therapy. Meridian’s comprehensive treatment team includes addictionologists, LPCs and LISWs and CDCAs. Therapists use CBT, DBT and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). Clients needing significant dual diagnosis support meet with specially trained therapists. Clients addicted to opiates can receive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone or methdaone. MSC clients attend daily 12-step meetings in the community and at the main Meridian Campus.
Women’s Center South clients must be clean for at least 30 days before entering the program. Most have just completed an inpatient treatment program, many of them at MSC. Upon admission, the treatment team creates a plan that includes on-going participation in Meridian’s outpatient program, either at the standard outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care. Residents received transportation to the main Meridian Campus for treatment, which includes group therapy one to three times each week and individual therapy as-needed.
Women’s Center South clients are required to attend at least three 12-step meetings each week and to obtain a sponsor. Clients needing dual diagnosis support receive therapy and medication from Meridian’s co-occurring disorders team. They may also receive vocational counseling and case-management services.
Extras
MSC clients receive aftercare planning which may include placement in one of Meridian’s outpatient programs or long-term housing programs.
The staff at Women’s Center South does its best to create a warm and stable environment for residents and often hosts holiday dinners and birthday parties for the residents’ children to foster a connected recovery community.
In Summary
Meridian Healthcare has been providing residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment for over four decades and was a pioneer in the development of dual-diagnosis support in Ohio. With a comprehensive treatment team and several coordinated levels of care, Meridian is equipped to offer long-term on-going recovery support to women and their families.
