The Basics

Sober Men Living operates four transitional living homes in the historic town of Kennesaw, Georgia. The program at Sober Men Living follows the principles of 12-step methodology with an emphasis on personal accountability through recovery. The newly-renovated Alpha House has high-end amenities and provides a pleasant and structured sober living environment for men who are new in recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Sober Men Living houses are all on the same block in Kennesaw. Newcomers to the program stay in the Alpha House for the first 90 days of their residence and then may be moved to one of the more “advanced” houses. Sober Men Living has both single- and double-occupancy rooms. Residents share common dining, family and living rooms. They cook for themselves and share in household chores.

The homes are also outfitted with new furnishings and have high-definition TVs  with cable and HBO. Other amenities include Wi-Fi and on-site laundry machines.

Rules and Regulations

Sober Men Living has contracted with an outside provider to offer a customized Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for those who need it. Residents can live at a Sober Men Living house while attending an IOP staffed with MFTs, CSWs and certified addiction counselors.

Residents meet with one of the houses’ employees for an hour a week to check up on their progress in terms of their sobriety, employment and personal relationships. They are expected to live a 12-step lifestyle, which means attending at least seven AA or NA meetings a week, refraining from using drugs and alcohol and submitting to random testing.

SML is in the process of implementing a six-month, structured life skills program that will cover budgeting, relationships, and balancing work and recovery.

Extras

Sober Men Living encourages Big Book study, relapse prevention work and life skills training. The “fun in recovery” component of its program includes sober group outings to a movie or a bowling alley, as well as baseball games, rock-climbing excursions and white-water rafting trips. The outings sometimes involve residents of all four houses.

In Summary

Sober Men Living is much more than just a stopover sober living to camp out in for a few months.  The emphasis on structure and rules may make it a great choice for a fresh-from-rehab young man who needs some peer support on the road to independence and recovery. The recommended minimum length of stay at the house is six months, although some men stay up to a year, so this is not a commitment for the faint of heart.
