The Basics
Established in 1982 on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter is an expansive organization that focuses on providing services for the homeless and at-risk citizens of New York City. In addition to its housing programs, counseling services and educational and vocational support programs, the facility also offers an outpatient program for substance abuse called Chance for Change, located in the lower level of the Madison Presbyterian Church on Madison Avenue and 74th Street.
Treatment and Staff
Though Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter is a long established institution which has offered a variety of substance abuse rehabilitation services in the past, Chance for Change is a relatively new program, having launched in April of 2016. It offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of group and individual therapy, Monday through Friday, on a 9 to 5 schedule. While the program is linked with the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter and thus, a boon for its homeless and at-risk constituency, it is also open to all and includes self-referring clients not affiliated with the organization. The group and individual sessions utilize evidence-based treatment, with an emphasis on CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Twelve-step recovery is strongly encouraged and clients are referred to local meetings and receive program literature. There are also DWI/DUI assessments and classes and special group sessions for anger management, domestic violence and parenting skills. Chance for Change’s staff currently consists of CASACs and social workers and there is also a psychiatrist on staff who offers psychiatric evaluations and provides dual diagnosis care.
Typically, the program lasts six to nine months, with a slow tapering off process, as clients step down to a standard outpatient program with one to two group sessions a week and individual sessions as needed. There isn’t an official aftercare program in place, (having launched six months ago at the time of this writing), clients are free to return to attend group sessions indefinitely and Chance for Change encourages regular communication with all clients who finish the outpatient program.
Extras
Because Chance for Change falls under the larger umbrella of the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter program, clients attending the program can take advantage of the vast auxiliary services the organization offers, including housing placement services, medical treatment, comprehensive mental health counseling and employment services.
In Summary
While the program is relatively new, clients participating in Chance for Change can be sure of aligning themselves with a long running New York institution. The extremely affordable program offers a comprehensive IOP with a nod towards modern therapeutic methods and 12-orientation. Furthermore, clients can also expect to avail themselves of the larger services of the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter organization.
